Koi News

July 31, 2005
Well, I wasn’t planning on writing anything so soon, but I have some actual real news. One of my koi when and got herself knocked up. I have koi eggs sticking to bits and pieces of my tank and decorations. We will see if they hatch and I become the proud mommy of 1,000 more koi. That would bring the count up to 1,003. Fun.
If you want a koi let me know, I might have a few extra.

Thuggee

July 30, 2005
The world?s most prolific serial killer was named Behram. He killed at least 931 people between the years of 1790 and 1830. He was the leader of an Indian cult called the Thugees (origin of the word thug). It is believed in the 600 years of the cult’s known existence members were responsible for around 2,000,000 deaths.
So, what did you learn today?

Just a Quick Update

July 30, 2005
Well, I have been a busy busy person. I work every weekday and hate it. Except for Fridays, when I work for Cerro Caliente Cellars pouring wine. I love it! I get to interact with tons of people from everywhere and drink and learn wine.
The Ellen and boys situation has become rather unique in the past several weeks, and just got more so.  If you want that bit of gossip you are going to have to talk to me face to face.
Annika-the-roommate (’[info]’annikaatpoly, see how she truly never updates) is engaged to Paul.  She also won an internship working with condors, so she is on a 10 days on 4 days off schedule through December, which means I pretty much have the house to myself, seeing how she lives down in there while she is working.  Lastly, she asked me to be a bridesmaid in her wedding, so it looks like the next wedding I go to I have to participate.
Speaking of weddings, Myles and Kim’s wedding was beautiful, they are now back from their honeymoon and have moved into their new apartment in Templeton, which pretty much rocks special thanks to the red headed saw owner and accomplices.
I am painting my room this weekend, chocolate brown and soft white, it will be lovely and spacious looking which will be beneficial when I get my full sized bed.  No more fricken twin sized beds, I am thrilled.
That’s all the immediate news I can think of. Until next time.

Curiouser and curiouser

June 22, 2005
They changed the color of the yellow M&Ms. They have gone from a nice gentle goldenrod yellow to a not so mellow florescent yellow. Fascinating.

(P.S. I know this doesn’t count as a real update and that I really should share more. I have nearly a months worth of stuff to share and I am lazy.)

Transglobal Interning

May 18, 2005
This site, http://www.crew9.net/, makes me wish I had a use for a Swedish intern. So, I pose the question to you, which Swedish intern do you want and what would you do with them?

I am leaning towards Jesper Malmberg, mostly because my IKEA dresser design is called Malm. He would be responsible for proofing my papers, fetching me coffee, and being my alarm clock (’cause recently I have been feeling the need to add a 7th to the collection).

Tea Love!!

May 15, 2005
I am a happy girl. A while ago, I ordered Chocolate Tea from Adagio Teas (http://www.adagio.com) and received it. I opened up the bag, sniffed my new procurement and then, seeing as how I wasn’t in a tea mood, put is away with the rest of my extensive tea collection. Last night I was in a tea mood, so I go rummaging through the teas, not wanting one of my standards. I re-discover the chocolate tea!

I love the little rituals involved in loose leaf teas. I rinse and put together my little glass teapot with built in strainer, then I heat my first cup of water. In the water goes to the teapot, to warm it up. While that is warming, I heat up my second cup of water (special thanks to a special microwave) to a rolling boil (or slightly less, depending on the delicacy of the flavor and leaf). Right before the water comes out of the microwave; I dump the water used for warming, and shake a little over a tablespoon of tea into the strainer. I then let the just boiling water flow over the tea leaves and into the tea pot. After letting the tea steep for 2-5 minutes depending on the varietal, I have a beautiful cup of perfectly made tea.

Back to the chocolate tea, heaven! Delicate chocolate flavor perfectly interlaced with high quality black tea. Delectable, satisfying, good for the soul.

Oh...my...god!

May 3, 2005

See those burgers?  Those burgers are not photo-shopped to hugeness, they are actually that size.  Fifteen (yes, 15) pounds each they are being served at Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub in Clearfield, Pa.  I am never moving to Pennsylvania, ever ever ever.  The damn thing costs $30 and comes with 10.5 pounds of ground beef, 25 slices of cheese, an entire head of lettuce, three tomatoes, two onions, and a cup and a half each of mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, mustard, and banana peppers.  It is called the Belly Buster, and if you can eat it all, without help, it is free.  Wow, yuck.

Inventions Part 2

May 3, 2005
Well, you all had quite the variety of answers. Airplanes, electronic paper (something to do with electromagnetic pixilation, I think), ecstasy (that’s what I get for asking the weird people in my classes), books and some other stuff. I will use this new information in my mental files for all of you; it will accumulate there with other nearly useless information, like your shoe size.

As for me, I still haven’t decided on my favorite invention, it is still a straight tie between the movable type printing press and pants; although it would be easier to convince me in one direction than the other if you tried.

Oh, and I wear an 8 and a half women’s.

Question of the Week

April 25, 2005

Letting my curiosity get the better of me is never a bad thing. This week I want to know:

What is your favorite invention?

It can be anything you are particularly fond of, or that you just think is extra cool.  To limit your list just a little, let’s put divine creation in a separate category from invention.

I will answer this question myself in a few days.  I will let you know, though, that if we were counting divine creation (or hey, look what evolution invented, depending on your way of looking at things) my favorite invention would be men.

Hop!

April 20, 2005
I learned recently that rabbits have been misclassified, and since genetic testing is now being used to confirm all of the taxonomy, they have been moved. Turns out that rabbits do not belong in the Rodentia order, but rather in the order Lagomorpha, which makes them more closely related to deer and cows than to mice and rats. So, next time you see a rabbit don’t kick it and mutter "Stupid big eared, big footed rat." You should instead, stop what you are doing, consider this particular rabbit and its genetic heritage, kick it, and yell "MOO!" (For you doubt-prone naysayers, here’s a link, National Geographic says so; cute picture of punt-able creatures too).

Just three things

April 11, 2005
Today, as I passed the gas station, there was a fleet of four red PT Cruisers fueling up. One of those minutes I wished I had my camera. Cracked me up.

Never let a girl like me get bored. Tonight, no homework, taking a break from blanket making (sister Suzie’s birthday present), I painted my finger nails silver-white, not bad, good color with my skin. However, being bored, I added a crimson racing stripe to each of them, quite distracting. Also there is no remover in this house, so I am stuck for a bit. Maybe they will make me type faster. Zoom!

Lastly, I chopped my hair off. Cute so far, lets see how it handles when I have no time to deal with it in the morning. Good stylist, I might keep this one.

After nearly four years...

April 4, 2005
Well, it finally happened. Shit this is weird-- single.

the time had come the walrus said
to speak of many things
of shoes and ships and sealing wax
of cabbages and kings
and why the sea is boiling hot
and whether pigs have wings

Oh! Completely unrelated, I promise, new icon. It makes me cackle.

Oh wow.

April 2, 2005
Saw Sin City yesterday afternoon.  What a beautiful piece of work!  Visually astounding, coherent and intelligent story line, sexy, lots of blood, I am so buying the special edition DVD in a few months. I sincerely hope more main stream movies are this daring, it would make for a happier me.  Dear me, it was gorgeous.

Things heard on campus today...

March 30, 2005
Thing one: "I can’t wait for tomorrow’s Oprah, its about swingers!"
Thing two: "...can’t I just give you a blow job to get this over with? Seriously! That’s what I was thinking."

Good grief! What the holy hell is going on with my generation?  Ok, now granted these were only snippets of conversation I caught while riding by, but both of those comments nearly knocked me off my bike, especially the second one.

She’s Back!!!

March 28, 2005
Well, I made it back alive from Mexico around 1:30 last night. Had a great time, brought back two watches that claim to be Gucci, but I know better. Also brought back an undesired neck hickey, and now I have stories to tell. However, you want to hear them we will have to speak in person, because that is so very much better.

The Ellen, the spring break

March 25, 2005
The Ellen, she travels? Yes indeed! Starting at 5:30 AM tomorrow the Ellen will be navigating away from her common grounds in a direct line towards the San Luis Obispo train station, on foot. Once she reaches her goal, probably too early but definitely not too late, she will be boarding a train to Irvine, California, and from there will be being driven south to a foreign country, where she will enjoy spring break festivities with the reserved eye of a social psychologist (or something). She will enjoy herself, get hit upon, and as always fall back before the consequences of getting hit upon become a complication.

The Ellen, she sleeps? Don’t be ridiculous.

Socks

March 1, 2005
I declare tonight officially to be sock sorting night. I will take all of my un-paired socks, pair up as many as I can, and put the rest in the laundry hamper. After I do laundry, and have sorted out my socks again, I will throw away all the socks that do not have mates. This way I will not have a pile of friendless socks in the back of my sock drawer. Exciting stuff, no?

Also, check out the new icon, I lifted it from someone else.

Promise

February 22, 2005

Sometimes new experiences suck.

February 18, 2005

I did something new today, I purchased, wrote and mailed my first sympathy card. You see, a few weeks ago, my paternal grandfather passed away after a lengthy illness. It was suggested to me, rightly so, that I send his wife a condolences card. Olive, my grandfather’s wife, is not my grandmother (my biological grandmother passed away when my dad was young, and my emotional grandmother passed away when I was young), but is still a part of my family. Sympathy cards are something I have never been particularly interested in, understandably. I was at a loss for what to say, and how to express myself without sounding trite. Hell, I was at a loss over which one to purchase for the exact same reason. Finally picked one that wasn’t overly sappy, and sounded mostly sincere, wrote a little bit of what I hope comes across as kindness and signed it "Love, Ellen"

There are parts of adulthood that suck, that make it much less glamorous than what you idealize a kid. Most kids deal with loss, most deal with having to comforting others who have lost, none of them write condolence cards. There are other parts of adulthood suck, but that’s not for this conversation.

Lastly, my Dad has been going through the old family photos recently, scanning them and sending them to us kids. I think I will be posting a few here, but only the extra good ones.

Craving

February 8, 2005
I am feeling a desperate want for a peanut butter blended mocha with extra chocolate. Wow, that would be good, coffee, peanut butter, chocolate and frozen like a milkshake, yummm. Maybe I should make peanut butter mocha cookies, maybe I should do my homework, maybe I should go talk to the coffee stand girl...

I am reconstructing my signature, it has gotten sloppy and careless, not to mention illegible. My name has transformed from Ellen Clark to Eller Clox, or Elir Cloe, or something else all wrong. So now I am fixing it. Step one is to bring back the k at the very end and work back-wards. Wish me luck!

It’s a start...

January 28, 2005
So here’s how far I have gotten up until now, I would recommend all of these books but for different reasons.  Pease forgive the vagueness of the plot summaries, but I didn’t want to give anything away, when you have the simple joy of discovery by reading them yourselves.

1. Slatewiper, Lewis Perdue (2003, 387 pages)--  Typical airport light suspense novel, but with some good twists.  Involves genetic bio-weapons and one strong woman.  Nice, fast, easy read.

2. Foundation, Isaac Asimov (1951, 227 pages)-- This is one of those books that I have read many times, yet it still appeals to me.  It is an integral part of Asimov’s history of the future (the good majority of his novels-- particularly series-- follow one time line in one reality and if you can get them in order, they create several millennia of "history", you will also find similar themes and characters through many of them).  This specific book chronicles the beginnings of a society founded on an intellectual basis and how such a society can help to save the galaxy and civilization from a new, predicted, dark age.

3. Foundation and Empire, Isaac Asimov (1952, 227 pages)-- The obvious sequel to Foundation, deals with what happens when this new foundling society deals with the old power structures of the old and dieing governing body.  This mighty power struggle and the eventual victor is all that stands
between civilization and barbarianism.

4. Second Foundation, Isaac Asimov (1953, 225 pages)-- This and the last two books are contained within one ratty, taped up binding.  The last in the original Foundation trilogy (Asimov later wrote a few more Foundation books to fill in the story even more).  All the careful planning and calculating of the Foundation’s society gets thrown askew by one unique person, a mutant.  The last book details the consequences and recovery from such a mutant.

5. Skinny Legs and All, Tom Robbins (1990, 479 pages)-- Wow, how to concisely summarize a Tom Robbins plot?  Following a few years in the life of a waitress artist, her husband and a few select sentient items from her picnic basket (see, tough to explain).  All of Robbins? books are sexy, page turning, exciting pieces that are beautifully written and highly entertaining.

6. Dragonfly in Amber, Diana Gabalodon (1992, 947 pages)-- Part of another series (first of which is Outlander), it is a historical romantic fiction, and the gratuitous sex is kept to a minimum.  Again, the plot is rather difficult to describe, it involves time travel, Scottish uprising, babies and red heads.  I am actually reading this series backwards, and Outlander is next, but it will probably take me a while to get through it, time constraints and all.

Happy reading!

Mexican Food

January 25, 2005
I want to cook Friday, I was thinking Mexican food. There is something inherently wrong with me cooking Mexican for myself however, so here’s what I need from you.
A Kitchen-- I much prefer to cook in kitchens that are not mine, strange, I know, but it works. Besides my house sucks. However this means that you will be playing minor host, I’ll help don’t worry.
Eaters-- I tend to cook for many people, hence I need many people to eat my food, at least 4 would be good, but more would be even better.

If you want to hang out with me while I am cooking, you can learn how to make yummy yummy food.

That is all, respond and eat!

Duh-bebbie

January 25, 2005
Debbie, my boss, is the reason why IT and tech-support people hate their jobs.

Ok, so today, Debbie was on the telephone for TWO HOURS figuring out her new password. Apologising and calling her self stupid the entire time. The poor lady she was talking to also got a little bit of the life story and Debbie saying "I don’t know, one of the days I gonna sngh, huf just snap, you know?" As to the noises in the middle, she made them, really. I nearly lost my mind. Truely come-on, I am not super smart when it comes to computers, but I get the job done, I just don’t see how it can take TWO HOURS on the phone with a tech person to figure out your new password.

Not As Sane As I Appear...

January 19, 2005
So, you know I am a unique person, and that my personality is a bit different, but I don’t harm anyone, so what’s the worry, right?
I think I actually have a real problem. As I was going through my bed time routine this evening, I realized how unhinged I actually am. Brushing my teeth, getting water twice (once for tonight, once for tomorrow’s water bottle), making sure I have my apple, setting my 6 alarms, picking out my clothing (then changing my mind about the socks, and having to find new socks that matched better), remembering my keys, lock, and bike clothes, remembering my notebooks and book, brushing my hair, double checking the front door, triple checking my alarms, finding my book, packing my back-pack, and lastly going through my mental checklist to make sure I remembered everything. Neurosis, you are my friend. Once, just once, I would like to fall asleep worry-free and without spending an excessive amount of time going through the process. Gah, goodnight.
