This is just a test to see if I can update posts without duplication on my art site.
This is now the edited version, so this post is different than the first.

As you may know my sister’s wedding was this past Saturday. As the maid of honor, I was to give a toast. So here it is, and if you knew Isaac’s family you’d know why it was rejected:
I was worried about standing up here giving this toast, so I did some research to help start the creative juices flowing. However, the research wasn’t very helpful. All I learned was to never say that I slept with the bride. And, so, I haven’t.

Ok I need to share this with the world… I created my first thunderbird theme, except it’s not my theme because I just updated the theme I always used for TB 0.8. So I’m not claiming that any of this art is mine, or even any of the css, I just combined one old theme and a new theme to make a new old theme. Anyway, here’s a screenshot:

I’ve had way to much time recently. I left my old job last friday and don’t start my new one — yeah for new graphic design, ideal job — until this friday.
So with all this time, I started fixing up the clarinet website because there were some techincal gliches with the photo gallery. Then Brian suggested that I put blog up for news and events type stuff. I started doing that for the clarinet site and realized I really didn’t want to put in all that effort — and then getting my roommate to use it on top of everything. What I really wanted was to have a bolg on my site.
After trying out a few different types of blogs at opensource cms, I ended up going with WordPress. WordPress looked nice as default and setup in 5 seconds flat. But, as always, I couldn’t use the default look, which promted me to redo my whole site with a more stream-lined CSS — I think my pages are about half the lines they used to be because of all those embedded tables. So, here it is!

The following link is a video clip describing The Internet vs. Real Life from Red vs. Blue.
It’s funny.
The concept behind red vs. blue is to create an animated picture show, but without actually doing any of the work of animating, which, as Lauren can tell you, is hard. What they’ve done is esentially move characters around inside the video game Halo and then added their own sound.
At which point hilarity ensues.

Who says programmers don’t have fun. The guy on the right wrote the textbook for CSC 453, introduction to Operating Systems. And one of the other three guys in the picture is a VP at Novell. I’ll let you guess which one.

While playing World Of Warcraft, an online only computer game that is very popular among those in the know, I discovered a bug. Specifically, one of the quests specifies you are supposed to look for a certain character in “Warrior’s Hall” which, as it turns out, doesn’t exist. I finally found the character in “Hunter’s Hall” and dutifully submitted a bug report so that other players would not have to suffer the same indignities that I was subjected to for asking people for the location of a non-existant building.
But then I had to go and end my bug report like this:
“I got flamed many times trying to find “warrior’s” hall and it was not
enjoyable, so if you could fix this type, I’d appreciate it.”
That’s right, I mispelled typo. I’m pretty sure I’m banned from the internet at this point.

I’ve been procrastinating all morning, cyber-stalking people I’ve never met. I suuuuck at haggling, so people like this sort of impress me:
I bought a Chinese styled jacket today. The bargaining was such a headache since I actually wanted this so bad. I tried not to show it but it was hard.
First, it started off with me getting a fake Prada purse. Okay, so I didn’t want to get it, but I had no choice!! EVERYTHING is a FAKE brand name! It sucks ass, I’m serious. I just wanted a plain, black purse, but everything they make here is some cheap copy. I went to look for a plain purse at a department store, and it was so expensive. I gave up. Shanghai, you beat me on this one.
The purse was 180 yuan. I got it for 70. Muahahaha.
So I walked around and started to look for jackets because it’s getting cold. I went into this one store, and there it was, a pretty black silk jacket with black fur lining and orange and brown embroidered flowers. I told the guy I wanted to try it on. He goes, "How do you like it?"
Me: Ehh. Not bad. Too small.
He: Small? Not too small at all.
Me: It’s for my mom. I don’t really like it.
He: Oh, for your mom?
Me: Yup. How much?
He: 680.
Me: 300.
He: What!
Me: I know you get this for like 20 yuan, you know.
He: I don’t! It’s way more expensive than that!
So the usual banter goes on, and after five minutes, I’m losing ground because I like it so damn much.
Me: Dude, I’m a student, and I’m poor. You want me to pay 550 for this?
He: That’s the lowest I’ll go.
Me: No it’s not. 450.
He: No way.
Me: You’re never going to sell it at 550.
He: The foreigners will buy it.
Me: Oh yeah? I’ll walk around and tell them you’re a rip off.
He: Go check, no other stores have this.
Me: Walking around here will take around 40 steps. I charge 5 yuan per step, so you’re looking at a 400 sale.
He: You’re good at talking.
Me: You’re good at lying.
He: Where are you from?
Me: I charge 50 NT per question, so if you want to sell it to me for 550, you’re now down to 500.
He: What!
Me: Do you want to use that as your question?
He: There’s ATMs out there.
Me: Too far.
He: 550, final offer.
Me: Look in my wallet. You see the five 100 dollars? That’s ALL I have.
He: What about that 35 yuan over there?
Me: Are you kidding? How am I going to get home?
He: It costs 2 yuan for the subway!
Me: I’m going to take the taxi to bring soup to my grandmother’s house. She’s sick and can’t wait.
He: You’re lying.
Me: Takes one to know one.
He: 550.
Me: Okay. How about this. I’ll give you all the money in my wallet. Provided on one condition. I get to use whatever money I have first to get my way home. You get whatever money is left, after the trip is calculated, okay?
He: All right. Where do you live?
Me: Tibet. Looks like you owe me around 400 dollars USD.
He: What!
Me: Plus, the jacket should be free.
He: Okay, okay, 510.
Me: Chie! You even want to cheap me out of that 10 yuan that I could save for food?! Okay, whatever. But next time I want things cheap!!
So now I have this pretty jacket that would cost like 150$ at LEAST in the states. I’m happy. But now I’m broke. Shit.

When you move out and live on your own, you’re bound to find out that something is completely different than how you previously thought. This realization came to me today. I found out how much a book of stamps cost. It costs WAY too freakin’ much. I am never sending letters to you people again.
P.S. Happy Birthday Jessica!! :-)

yesterday sasha and i got together and went on various excursions including elmo’s diner (where i really should try to get a job), 9th street (where i should have hung out in high school), and the yarn store (where i should stop spending money). i knitted one leg warmer. it’s brown with purple stripes and it came out very nicely. i stole the pattern (but didnt stick to it) from a book i saw at borders while sasha was busy learning how to cheat her way into grad school. so i finished the legwarmer and it rules and i’ll put up a picture of it shortly. but i definitely don’t have enough brown to make another one so i tried to find the yarn at the expensive yarn store, thought i got the right shade, took it home and realized i didn’t.
the new store "ac moore" which i tried talking to my mother about calling it "ac newman" by mistake, has tons of great yarns including the brand that i THINK is the brown i need. it’s left over from fab’s brown and tan scarf. i should ask for it back so i can reuse the yarn. haha. so anyways, i can’t finish making my legwarmers until i find this damn yarn. if i wasn’t so poor i’d buy tons of all the stuff i buy so i never run out. i also made a hat but of course ended it too early so now i have to go buy more and add on. it will eventually have earflaps.
being unemployed rules.
i should start bringing knitting projects to my internship where the guy tells me to sit and "chill out" all day. grrruh.

I really hate it when my roommate tries to help out by changing the network setup without telling or asking me about it. I tried to ssh from work tonight to get some work done, but was denied because the odd-ball put a second open Wireless access point on our network. He wonders why its slow?
Newflash: wireless is slower than wired. It always has been and always will be with 802.11b networking. Sorry man, your other access point only complicates the matter.
Maybe having two might make things faster, but really? Do we need that much bandwidth? At least let me lock it down a bit so we dont broadcast internet for every fool for a block.

While in line for the best Mediteranian food in SLO (Jaffa Restaurant), I overhead someone mention the name “Du Bois.” Then another person mentioned it. Then, they were talking about how they were both Du Bois’, but from different families. At this point, I chimed in: “My name’s Du Bois too!”
At first, this was met with laughter. But, after about 5 seconds, they could both see I was serious. We had all three just ran into 3 separate, distinct Du Bois families. What are the chances? I need to go buy a Lottery Ticket.

Been a bit busy. I have decided to demote from Lieutenant to deputy. As a reserve there is no pay difference ;) Weekend was okay. Second weekend shooting. Taught some friends some of the basics and some basic combat skills. Our trip to Maui at the end of May is a huge light at the end of tunnel right now. That said, life is pretty good. Will post more tech/LE stuff soon. This next weekend is the SAR academy "survival" weekend. Ahh... back to basics. It is always fun.

about great-great-grandmother defending a convenience store and wounding the robber some very scary facts emerge. Here is a hint:

Crazy week. Paintball on Sunday and late nights (SAR/reserves) all week. Very ready for a nice slow weekend. Have Three DVD movies waiting at home, may adopt a German Shepherd, and play some good racquetball.
Still thinking about leaving SAR. I started this when I was single and I needed a focus for my spare time.I am now married to a wonderful woman and think we deserve some more time together. Although, we are going to Maui for a little while at the end of May 8)

Now keep in mind, this sword exists(existed) only in the online gaming environment:

Just nuts. Imagine the things that might occur as this type of incident becomes more complicated due to online "realities" and motives. Criminal investigation will become just as entwined with the virtual world. I guess Virtua Cop would be the name......
My current dream toys are a PSP, seen some very cool hacks for it already and a iPOD Photo.

This is a free service I have been using for over a year. You log on to their website and define what roads/highways you use to get to work. It uses the time of day to assume whether you are on your way home or to work. It can also do ad hoc queries. Check it out at:

Howdy all! Hope everyone is doing well, I know I am. Still moving at a breakneck pace, but I’m getting rather used to it. Just a couple quick things, before I get back into everything.
New biking personal record. The corner of Highland and Santa Rosa to Cuesta in 16 minutes! That makes me so very cool, you have no idea.
My Halloween costume was very impressive, when I finally get a picture of me in it, I’ll put is up for ya’ll to check out.
Lastly, and most importantly, I am inviting everyone reading this (and anyone else for that matter), to join me for capture the flag Friday evening. In my park (Cuesta Park, the one at the end of Loomis and that counts as my backyard, that is), 7pm, November the 4th. It’ll be after dark, so wear dark clothes and bring your own flashlight if you want one. We’ll be meeting at the swing set. Afterwards we’ll be at my house, there will be DBA and Fat Tire; there will also be other consumables, lively conversation, and the possibility of goodness knows what. Bring your friends. Any queries can either be posted here, or give me a call if you have my number.
If you can make it, I expect to see you there; if you can?t, I expect a great excuse. Even if it involves fiction, you have to make up for your lack of presence by amusing me some other way.

Birthday came a little early this year as these fine gentelmen appeared in my closet April 24th.

The boy with three spots on his back Hollie named "Ratzinger" (very clever I think). I named the other "Rodent Langdon." Just "Langdon" or "Rod" for short. Since both names have ties to it we named the cage "the Vatican."

Ratzingers on the Left, Langdon on the right. The Rats are absolutely awsome plus they have a bit of growing left to do. I bought a crawler ball so they can run around, and as time goes on stuff will be added to their cage.
Feel free to stop by and say hello!

This is how I believe the Tag and Axe body sprays came into existance. Sort of...
Prologue:
Joel Port: (on the phone) Yeah! Yeah! Is this Channel? I would like to pitch an idea to you retards! Yeah! Yeah! I call it not-subtle advertising.
-pause-
Mysterious phone voice: We are intrigued. At nineteen hundred hours be at our front door, when the fog screen releases you from its bondage follow the scent down lovers hall to our plush lounge so we may speak man to man.
Scene:
Joel enters a room that looks vaguely familiar as a room he saw on tv once... Or maybe it was a dream. He is instructed to sit by a large red plush chair in which sits a small french man and he takes a seat in a glorified polka dot bean bag chair.
Sharlette: You smell like cheeseburgers and Heiny.
Joel: Heiny?
Sharlette: Heiny! Yes. Beer! Ugly smell, reminds me of tractors.
Joel: Yes, well I had a beer before I left home.
Sharlette: Well aren?t we are a quick desert fox. My name is Sharlette and I control what you smell when you smell it and even where you smell it. I make your girlfriend smell magical so you wish to get in her pants. I dance images of popcorn in your head when you walk into a movie theater, I even produce a new car smell every year so that those rancid SUVs sell like hotcakes. My rule is undeniable but there is something missing. Joel, that missing link lies in you.
Joel: No shit! I am a fucking genious.
Sharlette: You are an Ox.
Joel: I was in advertising 101 just the other day when we were talking about sex in advertising.
Sharlette: Yes, yes, I know all about sex, Channel has sex in all their commercials.
Joel: You call that sex? Look, I am about to lay an A-Bomb on your ass so you better be ready for this.
Sharlette: (sharply) You know nothing of my ass.
Joel: Except you live in a world that has no reality ingrained in it. Look at me!
Sharlette: You are putrid.
Joel: I am a common man. I and all my brothers have no use for you or your scents.
Sharlette: I am all too aware of your ignorance.
Joel: You have tried for countless years to get us to buy cologne so we smell good but to little avail.
Sharlette: You have not responded to any of our advertising campaigns.
Joel: Exactly! You snub us with sexy men and women, and whisper your name, and it gets you nowhere because we can?t figure out what the hell is going on! You think you are subtly sexing your market, but all you are doing is rousing confusion in the male. If you want him, me, to respond you need to be more direct.
Sharlette:You slob, sex is direct.
Joel: Not subtle sex. Look at beer advertising. Normal guys, sexy girls, familiar locations, and humor.
Sharlette: I shudder.
Joel: Just replace beer with your product and you have got something. What your commercials really need is that 1-1 correlation, that slap in the face ?use this you shitface? jab. It is as simple as saying ?this product will make girls have sex with you.? No need to use subtlety on your audience during their football commercial breaks. (gets inspiration) ?Just do it.?
Sharlette: You have one hole in your story.
Joel: please please, my story is all about hoes.
Sharlette: Women must not be offended. The prices they pay for our products yield profits Rockefeller could only dream about.
Joel: That?s why you start with a clean slate. A new product. Something not in a prissy glass bottle. Shit, you could but it in a shave gel bottle for all I care, and give it a manly name. Like Razor, or Warhammer.
Sharlette: Yes. Yes. Yes. You have opened my eyes to a new world of profitability.
Joel: So when do I get my check?
Sharlette: Really now. Did you think you will be paid for this? This wasn?t a consultation as much as it was an assault on my nostrils. I should sue you for walking on the gravel by the entrance.
Joel: yeah, well, I feel I should get something.
Sharlette: Monique at the front desk will give you samples of our new fragrances, and a style magazine.
Joel: You’re loosing me Shar.
Sharlette: Fine, and you will get a years supply of this new product. Ok?
Joel: Yes. I want the sex.
Sharlette: Leave fast, I need the oxygen bar to cleanse my head of your tinge.

Garage Sale Updates: Part 1
Today is Saturday!
Today was a great day for garage sales in San Luis Obispo.
It’s the season. Let me mention a few garage sale outings that served me well.
Two weeks ago: Myles, Ellen and myself in San Luis.
The Route: Loomis, Grand, Monterey, San Luis Drive, Johnson, Laurel, Orcutt, Broad, South, Los Osos Valley Road, Foothill. (Roughly.)
The theme? Everything we could possibly want! What a great Saturday to be rummaging through people’s junk! Myles and I set out with a few things in mind. I had been making the proper arrangements to install a new stereo system in my brother’s Sentra, for one thing, and I knew I could use an amplifier for his subwoofer. I knew that if I came across an older G3 Macintosh, I would probably buy it, and Myles had openly declared, "I like your ramp stands. How did you get them?" We had spent a good portion of the previous Wednesday under his car which was up on my stands. I had gotten them at some other garage sale a year ago for five bucks. "It would sure be nice if I could find some ramp stands for five bucks."
First item of interest: Broken Revision B iMac. "The screen doesn’t work." Excellent. Five bucks. It’s an old 233 machine, and it sure has been hell getting an operating system on it, but damned! I found the machine I was hoping to get. Not a bad deal. Let me say one thing, if I may, about selling old computers. If you are to sell an old computer, for you own sake, make sure the following are not still on the hard drive:
Lists of phone numbers.
Your on-line passwords.
Direct bill-pay receipts with your checking account number on them.
Letters threatening your boss.
Your office contact information.
Your and your family’s first names.
Copies of your birth certificate.
...or especially ALL of those things. You never know who’s gonna buy your computer and decide whether or not to wipe the hard drive!
Next, I found an old car amplifier! Three dollars! It looked like it had been marinated in egg whites and buried in the ground for a year. A little rather dirty, as I say. It took disassembling the sucker completely and soaking the parts in Simple Green to make it look halfway good, but damned if it doesn’t work. Just my luck!
Lastly, Myles had his cake. As we were driving in the Woodbridge neighborhood, we spied a pair of yellow ramp stands on a well-endowed driveway and made immediate arrangements to SCOOP THEM THE HECK UP. How much? Five dollars? You can’t plan this type of thing! The garage sale gods were smiling. It was a beautiful day, as well.
Next week Ellen and I were in Riverside. I don’t know what route we took, but all I got was license plates. Two South Dakotans. South Dakota is now way over-represented in my collection (which partially borders my bedroom.) but they’re fun. The citizens or Riverside apparently like to have garage sales, but keep all the good stuff to themselves.
Later: Today’s Garage sale! Also--the story of why I hate humming birds!

I was drinking Minute Maid Strawberry Passion drink just now when I noticed something interesting: The label states, "Naturally Flavored Fruit Drink with other Natural Flavors."
Just what am I enjoying in my fruit drink if it contains natural flavors and *gasp* more natural flavors? A little redundant aren’t we?
The label is no more help unless you consider glycerol ester of wood rosin natures candy. Except I see something strange... something hidden between all the chemicals... oh my! it appears to read "natural flavors."
In addition to fruit juices it mentions by name I get mystery ingrediants in my drink. At least I know they are natural, right?
Woa, I had a sick-mind moment... Natural flavors... hmm... what could that poss- oh shit.

Part two: Today’s garage sale.
Ellen and me.
Route: Pretty much the same as other weeks. Begin by heading in the Johnson direction and end by swinging the loop up between the peaks from the direction of the Los Osos Valley. Then clean up by finding a few places here and there in the north part of the city. Garage sales everywhere! Johnson had four or so, Broad street had another four, perhaps, and the Los Osos valley had five or six. I didn’t haul in lots, but what I got was quality. Ellen actually made a purchase as well!
For me: A USB 1.1 web cam. I will give it to my sister so we can videoconference over AIM. She’ll bask in the glory of my iSight while I watch a grainy stream from her end, but it will be fun none the less. Not bad for a dollar. If it doesn’t work, I’ll keep the cord and ditch the camera. One point for me!
Additionally: Swing arm clamp lamp. No I don’t have one. Yes I have six. But they’re not green. I’ll put this one up and give one of the boring black ones to my archibuddy Susan.
Two points for me!
Also: an antique fan. Somebody hold me to posting a photo of my fans. They’re delightful. Made around 1950 or 60 or so and sporting surprisingly spartan blade guards, they could take your finger clean off with their metal blades. They’re not all too quiet, either, and they make the most wonderful hot machine smell when they run, but they’re mostly for decoration as far as I’m concerned. I have three counting the new one, which is most petite and doesn’t swivel automatically. Grandma says three is a collection. You don’t have a real collection until you have three. And now I have a collection of antique fans.
Lastly: I have a collection of antique 8 mm video cameras. I have four. I don’t really need more. I saw one today, however, which was in very clean condition and a lot more streamlined than the others in my set, which is to say it was not nearly as ugly. It was a Bell & Howell and it wasn’t a bad deal at three dollars, but I’m not interested in roping off another one of my rare and precious shelves for this particular collection. I decided to pass. Of course, by this time I had already wound it and taken the back cover off the thing. I had the trigger down and was pointing it at my buddy Ellen as if I were filming her. The girls running the sale were impressed that it was operating (they couldn’t figure it out) and decided to bring another item out from the garage that they though might be related. It was in a sturdy metal case, but they couldn’t for the life of them find out how to get it open. It was a Bell & Howell film projector and it matched the design of the camera so closely that the two could have been a set, for all I knew. It was as clean as the day it was new. They were gorgeous. Ten bucks for both.
Despite that Ellen was twisting the screws on me, I turned them down with the condition that I could come back another time and buy the if someone else hadn’t. I’d love to have them, otherwise. Some day I’d like to have a small room in my house where I can put all of the quaint or historical pieces I have including the fans, clocks, phones and cameras, and especially a 1940s deco style typewriter. They were one more pair of items I didn’t need to store somewhere, in the meantime. But the question is this: do I suck it up and go buy them? The girls were way-cute and it sure wouldn’t hurt to got chat with them some more. Is ten bucks worth finding a place for the old things if it means making friends with beautiful women?
Or am I pathetic or what?
Two points for me for spending the morning impressing people with useless 8 mm info.
Anyhow, Ellen bought a chair that she is delighted with. She’s washing the cover now as we speak. One point for Ellen. Have her tell you more about it.
All in all a good morning. It’s certainly no problem when life deals you so many good opportunities that you can pick and choose among them. And the temperature was in the upper seventies....

Mardi gras went off without a hitch in my house despite "Mardi Gras Canceled" signs all along the freeway and 400 cops patroling the city.
If this were a superbowl I would have said the guns won. AirSoft being the mvp
some cool masks
no mask, just his actual face.
At least we had brownies
All told we had a lot of fun playing telephone charades and then a few late nighters played apples to apples.
If I learned anything from the mardi gras I would have to say it is that the most religious people celebrate mardi gras hardy, and san luis obispo wants nothing to do with them, or their drunken friends from fresno state.

I am a happy girl. A while ago, I ordered Chocolate Tea from Adagio Teas (
http://www.adagio.com) and received it. I opened up the bag, sniffed my new procurement and then, seeing as how I wasn’t in a tea mood, put is away with the rest of my extensive tea collection. Last night I was in a tea mood, so I go rummaging through the teas, not wanting one of my standards. I re-discover the chocolate tea!
I love the little rituals involved in loose leaf teas. I rinse and put together my little glass teapot with built in strainer, then I heat my first cup of water. In the water goes to the teapot, to warm it up. While that is warming, I heat up my second cup of water (special thanks to a special microwave) to a rolling boil (or slightly less, depending on the delicacy of the flavor and leaf). Right before the water comes out of the microwave; I dump the water used for warming, and shake a little over a tablespoon of tea into the strainer. I then let the just boiling water flow over the tea leaves and into the tea pot. After letting the tea steep for 2-5 minutes depending on the varietal, I have a beautiful cup of perfectly made tea.
Back to the chocolate tea, heaven! Delicate chocolate flavor perfectly interlaced with high quality black tea. Delectable, satisfying, good for the soul.

This site,

I am leaning towards Jesper Malmberg, mostly because my IKEA dresser design is called Malm. He would be responsible for proofing my papers, fetching me coffee, and being my alarm clock (’cause recently I have been feeling the need to add a 7th to the collection).

Today, as I passed the gas station, there was a fleet of four red PT Cruisers fueling up. One of those minutes I wished I had my camera. Cracked me up.
Never let a girl like me get bored. Tonight, no homework, taking a break from blanket making (sister Suzie’s birthday present), I painted my finger nails silver-white, not bad, good color with my skin. However, being bored, I added a crimson racing stripe to each of them, quite distracting. Also there is no remover in this house, so I am stuck for a bit. Maybe they will make me type faster. Zoom!
Lastly, I chopped my hair off. Cute so far, lets see how it handles when I have no time to deal with it in the morning. Good stylist, I might keep this one.

I declare tonight officially to be sock sorting night. I will take all of my un-paired socks, pair up as many as I can, and put the rest in the laundry hamper. After I do laundry, and have sorted out my socks again, I will throw away all the socks that do not have mates. This way I will not have a pile of friendless socks in the back of my sock drawer. Exciting stuff, no?
Also, check out the new icon, I lifted it from someone else.

I did something new today, I purchased, wrote and mailed my first sympathy card. You see, a few weeks ago, my paternal grandfather passed away after a lengthy illness. It was suggested to me, rightly so, that I send his wife a condolences card. Olive, my grandfather’s wife, is not my grandmother (my biological grandmother passed away when my dad was young, and my emotional grandmother passed away when I was young), but is still a part of my family. Sympathy cards are something I have never been particularly interested in, understandably. I was at a loss for what to say, and how to express myself without sounding trite. Hell, I was at a loss over which one to purchase for the exact same reason. Finally picked one that wasn’t overly sappy, and sounded mostly sincere, wrote a little bit of what I hope comes across as kindness and signed it "Love, Ellen"
There are parts of adulthood that suck, that make it much less glamorous than what you idealize a kid. Most kids deal with loss, most deal with having to comforting others who have lost, none of them write condolence cards. There are other parts of adulthood suck, but that’s not for this conversation.
Lastly, my Dad has been going through the old family photos recently, scanning them and sending them to us kids. I think I will be posting a few here, but only the extra good ones.

I want to cook Friday, I was thinking Mexican food. There is something inherently wrong with me cooking Mexican for myself however, so here’s what I need from you.
A Kitchen-- I much prefer to cook in kitchens that are not mine, strange, I know, but it works. Besides my house sucks. However this means that you will be playing minor host, I’ll help don’t worry.
Eaters-- I tend to cook for many people, hence I need many people to eat my food, at least 4 would be good, but more would be even better.
If you want to hang out with me while I am cooking, you can learn how to make yummy yummy food.
That is all, respond and eat!

Sarah is the coolest person ever.
Now she owes me three dollars.
What do I say? I’ve got no good news, I’ve got some of the opposite, and I feel like a carcass. So how can I blog about one?
Ok. I’ll give you something substantial tomorrow perhaps. I went to Los Angeles on Thursday so I could visit a small university downtown. (www.sciarc.edu) Only one of the good looking women met last time was there and she was hugging her boyfriend. I will spend all week putting together an application for SCIArc, but it’ll be ok. I’m going to distill every semi/demi-cool thing I’ve done in Architecture into a small book and send it to them. Anyway, I also met most of my Cuesta Arch 251 class at the Walt Disney concert hall downtown on Friday for a field trip. We also went to the Skirball Cultural Center and the J. Paul Getty Center. The Getty is wonderful. It provides for a tremendous view of the City of Los Angeles and all the LA basin. To make a long story long, I would like to share a panorama with you in a few days when I put it together. It will be nice. I might even do a little Architecture photo blogging. That’s not to say I’ll ever be an architect. Maybe someday I’ll have that ’05 Mustang I want. I should get DIA’s tranny flushed anyhow, just in case. You all have a nice afternoon or whatever you’re having now.

Ellen signed in to LiveJournal with my computer last night and left herself signed in, right up till now. My first thought? Hijack! It would serve her rightly!
Please let the record show, however, that I did the right thing by not taking over her blog and posting a crazy entry. No Caramel boobies, either!
Evidence:

That will teach you! This reminds me of a story my brother told me recently about an incident between the Chinese and American navies. The Chinese had deployed thirty-two ships to the straight of Taiwan and were conducting exercises, mostly battle maneuvers. It was just practice. If I remember correctly, the United States sent eight hunter-killer submarines to the same location. Each submarine is known to be able to hold four torpedoes capable of sinking a large ship, and each moved in beneath the Chinese vessels silently and undetected. Then, all at once, at a coordinated second, the eight submarines turned on their RADAR equipment.
Ping!
Basically, the message was, "We got you." One ping from eight subs was enough to get the attention of the Chinese. The eight submarines with their thirty-two torpedoes went silently back to international waters.

Garage Sale Update 2-26-2005
Hi everyone!
Sorry, I haven’t been real good about posting updates recently, have I?
For one thing, it’s been raining here. Actually, there were probably all of five garage sales in this entire state last weekend. Garage sales were out in force today though!
Also, I’ve lazied out on a few occasions. They weren’t very interesting days, I think. Three or four weekends ago was a good day, it seems to me; I remember that Ellen and I took an enormous detour out to Lopez lake. "Where does Tank Farm Road go in this direction?" "Let’s go see." We went NorthWest on Tank Farm until it became Orcutt Road and then teed into Lopez Drive. (We went left. Right goes to Arroyo Grande. Beautiful drive, I’m certain, in both directions.) We cruised around the lake briefly on the road at the edge, but decided to head back to town.
It was the most glorious day in all of creation. The hills were all green and the air was clear like it can be only after a good strong storm. I’m looking forward to Summer (I have been since August) but I know it’s gonna be hazy pretty much every day between now and September. Just the nature of things. I had better appreciate the beautiful clear ones now.
We’ll go back. I think Ellen still wants to camp there. We added it to our list of places to explore. We then got back down to Broad street. I think that was the weekend when I bought a pre-amplifier for my friend Ben. I have no idea what the theme was that week. It was probably wimpy.
The next weekend was decent as well, I think. I remember that theme for sure: Telephones. Nice ones, lame ones, ones with cords, ones with batteries, ones with both, but all Touch-Tone. Thousands and thousands and thousands of telephones! True, Touch-Tone phones are probably the world’s most common garage sale item, but it’s unusual for EVERY garage sale to have one. And every garage sale had at least two. Did I buy something? I can’t remember everything, but I got a motion sensor for Myles! And I got six Firestone Walker BEER! glasses. It was a good day.
Ten points for me. Because.
So...today.
I got up late.
No, I got up at seven-thirty to get an early start! I even stuck my alarm clock on my desk so that I’d have to climb out of my bed loft and turn it off. I found myself standing in the middle of my room about three minutes after it had begun ringing, cold and tired, and I made a conscious effort to get back in bed for, you know ten minutes or so.
So later, around 9:30, I actually got on the road. And what you’re thinking is true. That was a lot more than ten minutes later. I’m a bum. But I still got stuff done.
Route: Santa Rosa, Foothill and vicinity, Los Osos Valley Road, Madonna, Higuera, South Street, Broad, U-turn, Santa Barbara, Osos, Olive, Chorro and then to Cal Poly to pick tangerines.
The stuff: I bought Ben a record player ($4 )to go with the previously mentioned pre-amp ($8) from a couple of weeks ago. He’ll be playing vinyl in no time! ($12. Or, if his birthday is coming up sometime soon....) I bought a gasoline can ($2) for my lawnmower (Free plus the cost of a lot of spray paint) which I don’t use. My thought: Maybe I would use it more if I had a way to get gasoline in it? No. What do I have to mow? I could mow the back yard here at my little house but I’d have to level the grass with a weed-whacker first. And I’d hate to even go in the grass because of all of the dog clumpies. Here’s how I see the gas can coming in handy: Lawnmower! With Racing Stripes! $35 dollars! Free Gas Can! Buy it today! And, of course, I could use a little gas to show that the machine works. Oh, have you all seen my lawnmower?
Yeah, I like it too. I refurbished it last summer. It’s a John Deere and I painted it up with the official John Deere colors.
So, yeah, a good weekend. Two points for me. One for the turntable, one for the gas can.
The theme? Well, there were two gas cans, and I bought one. There was no over-riding theme among any of the items, but, interestingly, there was a theme among the containers for the small things for sale. At three separate sales there was a Firestone Walker Double Barrel Ale box that was being used to contain something else for sale! Weird, huh? I guess that has to be the theme. Mostly for lack of anything better.
Another interesting observation:
There was a sign up in front of someone’s garage that said the following:
Twin Bed--$20
Queen Bed--$30
Dresser--$40
(Good Condition)
Piano--$80
(Clean)
House--$539k
(Four Bedrooms)
Gazelle--$100
(Exercise Machine)
I laughed. "Exercise Machine" was written pretty small. Ok, you’re right, not very funny. Let me know if you have a lawn that needs mowing.

I live with a house full of idiots. Four of them. And there are sixteen legs among them all. Perhaps, now, you understand that I’m not referring to the humans. Here are two of the idiots:
This is Cody. Cody is an idiot.
See here? The vacant stare? He sits next to a puddle of his own urine (covered in powered
Resolve.)
Cody yawns. Highly hugable for an idiot.
This is Laura, by far my favorite idiot of the bunch. She lays on the floor like an idiot and chases balls like an idiot. It’s really great to watch. Who chases balls, anyway? What an idiot.
Here, Laura tells a toy what for by attempting to rip its eyes out. Laura is an Australian cattle dog--a Queensland Heeler--and is part Dingo. I still think she’s got that wild-dog look to her sometimes. She is really a sweet dog.
Coming soon, the Schnauzers, which are the biggest idiots of the bunch!

Here’s what a good car wax job looks like:
The water beads up everywhere and doesn’t stick to the paint. Wouldn’t you just love to run your hand across that surface and fling water off? No? Want to keep your hand dry? Just as well, I guess. It’s beautiful just as it sits.
Now compare my car to Chandra’s car.
Who’s got a good car wax job? I do and Chandra does not. Note the beading on the green paint (my car) and the flat streakiness on Chandra’s car. No fair pointing out that my bumper needs new paint! It will be twelve years old in half a month! Lucky for Chandra, her car looks nice and shiny right now, but what do you think happens when dirt gets in the water? It does not simply bead up and slide right off! Wax your cars!

First, is a picture of Myles cut and pasted onto a generic background with no other changes made.
The second and third are the result of some tweaking including a better connection to the background and touch-ups. It’s pictures like this that make me want to purchase a house.
Actually, picture or no picture, I would like to purchase a house. Some day, maybe.
Anyhow, this is Myles as he may appear on a refrigerator magnet near you.
The picture above is a first draft of a business portrait for Myles’ new real estate career. Myles and I have decided to try to pull off a stunt wherein we eliminate the middle man (professional photographer) and pass the savings on to you (Myles.) As the photographer, I need your help. Not knowing what I’m doing, really, I ask you, my demanding and exacting readers, to tell me how you really feel about this photograph. Background no good? Lighting all wrong? Tie selection too perfect? Let me know! And don’t reserve good criticism! It won’t hurt my feelings or Myles’ because our only real qualification for this photography thing is camera ownership. Thanks in advance!

I’ve not much to say tonight, but here is a copy of the panorama I made from fifteen images taken on the top of Black Hill in Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo County on Sunday, January23, 2005. Camera: Olympus C-3000. The time was roughly 3:PM. The city you see is
Morro Bay and the rock in front of the city is the famous Morro Rock. Think the Gateway Arch shows up on a lot of post cards? Look in a San Luis Obispo card shop some time. Blotchiness in ths sky is a result of repairing spots caused by a dirty lens. I swear it won’t happen again! The horizon has a curve to it because my camera was pointed slightly downward. What you see represents about 380 degrees of turning. The left and right ends of the image could be stitched together to make a full loop, and, in fact, I have also generated a version of this image that begins and ends at the sunset and is continuous through the east view. The atmosphere is not very clear--there is still a lot of moisture in the air from that morning’s marine layer. I’m hoping that after today’s storm moves out the air will be crystal clear. I will probably try this project again then. For now, though, enjoy a central coast afternoon! Click the picture below to see the larger version. Say hello to Paul and
Ellen!

This report concludes an unusual weekend, one in which my family spent time here in San Luis Obispo instead of the me spending time in Agoura. Also unusually, Ellen did not go along on this trip. She was teaching a seminar at Cuesta Saturday morning. She was replaced physically though not in spirit, by my mom.
The Cast, then: Me, Myles, Mom.
The Route: Starting from the Sands Hotel, where my folks and sister were staying: Monterey, San Luis Drive, Johnson, Laurel, Orcutt, Broad, Tank Farm Road, Poinsettia, flower name nonsense, Alyssum Drive, flower name nonsense, Sunflower Drive, flower name nonsense, Bluebell Way, flower name nonsense, Tank Farm Road, Broad Street, Marsh Street, Freeway, Madonna Road, Los Osos Valley Road, Oceanaire, Madonna, Los Osos Valley Road, Foothill and stuff, and back over to Murray Station Apartments to pick up Myles’ truck.
The stuff: I got a belt sander and a brown swing-arm clamp lamp. Two points for me! Swing arm clamp lamp: good condition, except brown. Actually, it will be a nice change of scenery. I have, currently, two white ones, two black ones, a grey one, a yellow one and a broken black one in the closet. I don’t know if I’ll use this one in my room despite the spectacular color variance it would bring to my space. Instead, I may give it to Susan, architecture buddy of choice. The belt sander is made by Rockwell (update later if I check and am wrong) and needs a new cord and a belt (loop of sandpaper). Here’s what I think: I may be risking a lot by paying two dollars for a broken power tool but I can easily replace power cords. There could be other things wrong with it but I’m guessing that it worked fine until the cord got eaten. You only have to break one major thing in order to render a tool inoperative and I think that that one major problem is the cord. To have broken two major parts at one time is not likely. Come to think of it, I will assign myself an additional arbitrary two points for paying two dollars for it and an additional nine for buying a broken power tool.
My new point total: Lots. Continuing:
Mom gets one point for buying Ellen an neat "throw" thing. By "throw thing", I don’t know what I mean except for that the item is made of deep red velvet with a gold pattern on it and tassels on the corners. Mom also gets an additional one point for generosity. Ellen seems to like it. She says she will "throw" it on the end of her bed and that it will go well with her room when she has her red accessories out. Apparently she can deck her room out in red or green depending on her mood. I’m glad mom was here to look at the blankets and other things made out of cloth because I usually overlook them completely, seeing VCRs and wire and stuff.
Myles wins the most points however. He and Kim are now proud owners of a Kenmore standalone gas range and oven. And hood! It’s clean, complete and the perfect thing for their new apartment. I have offered to build an island countertop for them in their new location and this will be the perfect centerpiece. Note: we did not tie the range to the top of DIA. As I said above, we retrieved Myles’ truck and loaded it up. This concluded garage sale morning. It was a good morning.
The overall count: There were lots of garage sales. Ten maybe? Still no motion sensor lights for Myles, but lots of other good things to look at.
Oh, and finally, the theme: Car wheels. Definitely car wheels. A set off a Chrysler Town and Country minivan, a set off a Chevy Camaro, and a set of custom Boyds wheels.
Myles says I should photoblog garage sales. Should I? Post a comment if you think you’d like to live out my garage sale experiences through pictures as well as words.

May I take this opportunity to extend a warm, friendly EAT BLEACH AND DIE to the lovely Sarah Sghettiletti for prohibiting my use of the boys’ new cookie jar. Sarah, I know Ellen was the instigator, but that doesn’t make it right or any less hurtful. If Ellen told you to put pepper in Sean’s coffee, would you do it? I think not. (By the way, I just thought of a good practical joke. Ask me about it sometime when Sean isn’t listening.)
To make a long story long, here’s what I think of your cookie jar dictum:

Furthermore, eat bleach and die and don’t listen when Ellen talks. It’s bad for you.

I did an awful lot of work for the Taus family in the previous eight days. As such I was exposed to an awful lot of Public Radio. There’s no need for me to say exactly how I feel about public radio. Instead I can offer you a new drinking game.
NPR News Shots:
Take one beer shot once when any of the following items is mentioned:
SUV
Fraud
Opinion
Corporate
"The Arts"
Protest
Discrimination
University
Hearing
Greed
Independent
Election
"Senior Official"
Take one hard shot of your choice as any of the following words is used:
Agenda
Advisor
Committee
Consortium
Commission
Council
Hydrogen
Politicize
Scandal
Oh, may I recommend that if you plan to play using shows like "Morning Edition" that you tape it and play it back in the evening? You’re gonna get loaded and perhaps it’s best not to play before noon.
Do you think I left anything out? The words selected are timeless classics and will be featured on "All Things Considered" between now and forever. Ok, go ahead and add "WMD," "Torture," and "President Bush" if you want, but you’re still gonna be puking when Freedom Jazz Dance comes on the next morning. Don’t talk to me about it.

Now that school is about to start and I am faced with the prospect of hours of un-fun boringness I foresee a tremendous increase in blogging. Starting now.
Weekly Garage Sale Update 1-15-2005
Yay for the first garage sale run of 2005! I wanted to go out for garage sales on January first when I was in Florida but I went to the friggin airport instead. I came home on the first. I came back to rain. I mention the rain not complain about it but to explain how it was that I went over fifteen days without pushing junk around on someone’s driveway. I mean to say that it was fifteen days in to January before I went garage-saleing. In fact, it has been a lot longer than fifteen days since I’ve been out for a morning of yard sales. Early December it was. It’s kinda nice to be back in the old routine.
Anyway.
The Cast: Ellen stayed over at apartment 82 so I picked both she and Myles up at 9:15 or so.
The Route: Murray Street, Santa Rosa, Foothill (Nothing there!!) Los Osos Valley Road (NOT pronounced "LOVeR" for short), then a bunch of nonsense including a traffic circle taken at forty miles per hour, Madonna, Higuera, South, Broad, Santa Barbara, Marsh, Santa Rosa, Murray.
Let me take a moment to address the topic of traffic circles. I fugging hate traffic circles that are installed to control traffic. It may be the American in me but I think that when a set or bunch or lot of roads come together there ought to be a traffic signal doing the hard work. I don’t like to merge into an intersection and then merge back out again. Waiting for a light to change is much less work and a lot less dangerous I think. It also gives drivers time to change CDs, comb their hair, etc. Traffic lights are better than traffic circles.
What I fugging do like is to molest the decorative traffic circles! Some neighborhoods look better with planters or trees in the center of their intersections, apparently, and so in places in this city where small residential streets come together and where there is basically no traffic, there is sometimes a traffic circle. I guess when you live in a rich enough neighborhood your sense of aesthetics requires something less octagonal than a stop sign where roads meet. I must live in a poor neighborhood. Whatever. Anyway: When I find one, riding in my car is like qualifying for the Urban Botanical Speedway 500. I go as fast as I can without breaking exceeding the coefficient of static friction in all four wheels. If only three of my tires are sliding, that’s ok. It spices up the driving in this otherwise boring little town. Oh--see also driving through puddles. I’d like to address that at some point too.
Anyhow--The Morning’s Statistics: Ellen and Myles should correct me by commenting if I’m wrong but it seems like we only found three or four or five garage sales. It wasn’t a really great morning, but some stuff was gotten. We chased a garage sale like crazy off of Los Osos Valley Road but the sign that we thought had told us to turn off the main drag was actually just alerting us of a garage sale over on Madonna. Gr. Stupid sign with no arrows. We hunted for at least ten minutes I think before we went over in the direction of Madonna and figured the mystery out.
I bought a bicycle helmet for two bucks! I didn’t buy it because I like bicycle helmets or much even because I intend to wear it, but because wearing a helmet means a lot to my dad and I’m not about to spend three dollars or more on one. Two-fifty, maybe. Anyhow, it’s a nice looking helmet and I’m sure it will look great on me as soon as I WASH IT REALLY THOROUGHLY. Um. Did I buy anything else? I almost bought a beige Apple G3 (and so did Myles) for five dollars (G3 233 with 32 MB RAM, 4 GB HDD, floppy, modem, a NIC and two monitor hookups) but we both decided that we didn’t need another really old computer. Besides, my iMac runs at 333 Mhz now and it can still be considered a piece of junk. Also: Myles and I met a genuine crazy person. He greeted Myles by commenting on how Myles’ hair was made out of leaves and then proceeded to act out some drama wherein he caught a flaming football or some such weird thing. He was a neighbor of one of the families putting on the particular garage sale and the good folks seemed like they did not enjoy the company of this gentleman. The family didn’t have much for sale but just the same I think we kinda skipped actually rummaging through their things and concentrated on getting away from the crazy man, which was too bad for the folks. That was the last garage sale of the morning. Hm. I keep thinking there was something else I bought. I’ll let you know if I think of it. Myles did not find the motion detector light he was looking for. Bummer. Maybe next week. As with all things: Maybe next week.

A beer followup:
When I first began to drink beer, I was somewhat unsure how to do it.
I was a wine drinker first, and I learned to drink wine at Vaughn’s wine-tasting bar on Higuera Street. Wine is swirled, sipped and swallowed only after extensive analysis.
Beer, likewise, deserves analysis, beer portions are larger than wine portions. Once I got used to beer and became an *official* beer drinker, I found out that beer is to be consumed more like soda than like wine. But it is to be savored more than soda if it’s decent beer.
So that’s the conclusion I’ve drawn. Beer is not to be sipped like wine, but it is not to be guzzled like soda. I like to consume beer in some manner in-between.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve written much of anything. I’m not sure why... I’ve had a bit of time, but just haven’t gotten around to it. That kinda saddens me, but then again, every once in a while (like right now), I’ll muster up some energy to type up a few words of wisdom.
It’s "hot" today in slo... windows are open. fan is on.. I can only imagine how hot it is in Paso Robles. yikes!
I’ve been surfing a bunch more lately. I’ve surfed Hazards 2 more times a couple weeks ago.... that makes a total count of 3 for my lifetime. :) It was so much fun. There was supposedly no swell in the water, but there were head high sets with some umph to them. I went to A-Beach yesterday with Stephan, Alyssa’s uncle. It’s been awesome to find some surfing stoke in Alyssa’s family. We had a blast, as always!
So, right now I’m in my transitioning period between my classes. This past week was my last week in photography. I ended up with an A- in it, which I’m happy with. But more importantly, I learned a TON about taking pictures, and what makes up neat looking pictures. Also, the entire development process from developing negatives to developing prints using an enlarger to spotting/mounting those prints on matte board. It was awesome.
Next week is my last class of my life... at least until I decide to go back to school, which isn’t a foreseen event in my life thus far. Technical writing. Bleh.
On the job front, I’m still working on finding that perfect job. It’s been hard, for some reason. I think I need to try a different approach. I’ll probably head over to the career center on campus next week and see if they can point me in some sort of direction. I really hope I’ll be able to find something when I move down to Huntington late next month. *grumble* I’m still very hopeful though... I have a good lead with
SMS, but I’m curious as to what kind of compensation they’re going to offer. The job sounds really fun, so I hope I get into it!
Moving’s coming up really fast... so is the big day. Yikes! :) Less than 1 month away... less than 4 weeks!! Kinda scary. Planning is going well. We have a grand total of 82 people so far that have RSVP’d. This is a bit less than our expected number, which is nice. Catering is decided. Rentals is decided. Cake and flowers is going down middle of next week. Everything’s coming together, which is great to see, and feel.
We’re going to start moving stuff into our new house early next month. It’s really nice having a place to go to once I’m done here in san luis. Now back to job-hunting...

So,
cheshirematt needed to use my computer, to run something he couldn’t on Mac. I let him. he told me an anecdote about a girl from his class. I then informed him that the price for using my computer had gone up. He had to invite said girl to dinner friday night, when he goes out with all his friends. It’s a fun night, so I don’t feel bad about it. I think
mayamaia should approve of this plan.

Broadway
Goo Goo Dolls
Broadway is dark tonight
A little bit weaker than you used to be
Broadway is dark tonight
See the young man sitting
In the old man’s bar
Waiting for his turn to die
The cowboy kills the rock star
And Friday night’s gone too far
The dim light hides the years
On all the faded girls
Forgotten but not gone
You drink it off your mind
You talk about the world
Like it’s someplace that you’ve been
You see you’d love to run home
But you know you ain’t got one
Cause you’re living in a world
That you’re best forgotten round here
Broadway is dark tonight
A little bit weaker than you used to beB
roadway is dark tonight
See the young man sitting
In the old man’s bar
Waiting for his turn to die
You choke down all your anger
Forget your only son
You pray to statues when you sober up for fun
Your anger don’t impress me
The world slapped in your face
It always rains like hell on the losers’ day
parade
You see you’d love to run home
But you know you ain’t got one
Cause you’re living in a world that you’re
best forgotten
When you think youre a joke
And nobody’s gonna listen
To the one small point
I know they’ve been missing round here
Broadway is dark tonight
A little bit weaker than you used to be
Braodway is dark tonight
See the young man sitting
In the old man’s bar
Waiting for his turn to die
You see you’d love to run home
But you know you ain’t got one
Cause you’re living in a world
That you’re best forgotten
And when you’re thinking you’re a joke
And nobody’s gonna listen

Why is it the internet is a void for useful information. i try to find stuff on Azrael. Just for amusement, and a trip towards the occult, for research into a poem. Had an idea to write on... but no... I find a temple dedicated to dead pets, people who are convinced he is the Son of God, and not a single useful bit of objective literature. Morons... Why is it that cabalists aren’t easily found... Would be so much better that way, or at least more interesting.
I’m tired of school, I’m tired of work, I’m tired of many things. One of these days, I shall find my happiness, and sit and do nothing else for a week at the shortest.

I want to figure out why my head is stupid. And so I figure I’ll talk it out with someone, and see if they think I’m dumb as well. Somebody do me a favor and just shoot me, before I get worse...

With eyes closed, I can see a picture, an everlasting landscape, as far as I can see. With eyes closed, I see a panoramic starline, a giant floating highway, leading off to freedom. I sit, and watch the pain unwinding, watch as all the findings roll back in. I stay, motionless and timid, waiting for the great black something to begin.
A burn, sitting there, unhealing, always left revealing the blood inside... I wish, that I could have it ended, stop having to pretend I never have cried. With eyes closed, the stinging pain surrounding, cascading and abounding, tearing me down. My tears, locked inside me, growing, never let near to overflowing, making me drown.
And now, with eyes closed I can listen, hearing the words glisten, turn and rebound... A play, with cast polysyllabic, an ending far less tragic, relief is around.
----
Who knows if that’ll look any good to me tomorrow. For some reason, I had a cadence in my head, and so I kinda went and played with it and the rhyme schemes in there. Hopefully someone likes it. Maybe that someone will even be me. Will look tomorrow. Less invested then...

One of these days, I should remember to unload my creativity, because I’ve been latent again, and I just need to start feeling alive again. Maybe the mercurial nature of my mood goes with it, but that’s a worthwhile sacrifice for art. i haven’t really written anything in so long, and I just feel the need to get words onto paper, to make them into somethnig they haven’t beenbefore. Honestly, even doing this is a small for of that. But I want to do it in a way thati catch a small portion of what I’m feeling, the pain between my shoulders, the fuzz in my head, and get that out of me. Hopefully, I find the time and the motivation and the inspiration to do so...

Well, Dragon’s head is full of fluff... But that’s ok. I want so many things, and for some reason, most of them are beyond me. I hate money... Anyways...
There is an amusing Car at school, with the license plate of ’00 Spy’. I don’t know if that is OO! Spy! or Double 0 Spy. But OOH! is a better interpretation. So it stands... It parks in about the same spot every day. It also has a license plate frame reading "I’m not spoiled... All the kids smell this way." It IS a Mustang. I’m still amused.
Other than that, more useless longings... If I can make it until April without screwing up horribly, I may be getting some money from home. Would be great...

I need down time, and I’m working to much, and have school every day. It makes me horribly sad. I have two weekly games, and one I try to fit in when I can, and I won’t be able to do any of them this week, unless the random one plays really late. I miss my leisure time. " To be or not to be: that is the question:
Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die:to sleep;
No more; and; by a sleep to say we end
The heartache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, ’tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish’d. To die: to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay there’s the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause."
So, I may or may not exist. We shall see. Samewhining, different time. I’ve updated, mostly cause

Another round of circle time
another day of feeling fine
another lonely mouth to feed
another time to sit and grieve
another time to sit and dwell
in this, my mind, my private hell
I burn life brightly, find a way
to live, to laugh by light of day
but every moment passing me
just leaves me feeling sad and lonely
I need a place, a thing called home
to keep me safe. (I hate this poem)

I was in San Diego. I will be again. But I’m going to SLO shortly. I’ve been fighting with the apathy... and the desire to not have to be at home any more may have me motivated... I hope...
So I’m not terribly happy with my financial state, but it’ll prolly get better...

I’ve been thinking. And it’s impossible to talk to and meet strangers. Why should they talk to the guy with the intense eyes who doesn’t always smile all the time cause he’s too nervous? I wouldn’t talk to me... And my friends don’t have anyone they could have me meet... and so I’m jut stuck. And lonely. Like always...

Well, was talking to BinaryLogic earlier, and he got me into a pensive mood, and so I’m still up, and posting. We hada brief talk about the world not rewarding people adequately for good behavior. And that is a major part of my depression. See, I think I’m a good person. Mostly because I don’t act on all the bad things. So shouldn’t I come out ok at least most of the time? I’ve just been in a downward spiral for the past month. I got dumped, I got laid off, and I’ve just sunk under it. And I needto fix that.
But really, there are just three things I’d like right now. A job that I can live with. A girl to cuddle with. And something amusing to do wile not spending time on the other 2. And i’m feeling lacking... and stagnant.
So, that’s mostly where I’ve been. I do still exist. Just trying to find direction again. And,
janusdoa, we need to hang out sometime. I tried callingyou earlier...

What to bring: Your bad selves; vegan foods; maybe some juice? presents are welcome but not required. CAKE.

This image had been in my album for quite a very long time, and I enjoyed it for it’s simplicity, and the dark serenity of the old graveyard. My dear friend is pictured here examining a grave. But I was looking at it just today, and I noticed something I had never noticed before... In the background on the right, it looks like there’s somone--or some
thing--behind the row of three gravestones! None of us remembers seeing anything there that night.
I have had forensic photographic experts examine the photo, and none of them can properly explain it. A few have tried to assert that it was light reflecting of a particle of dust very close to the lense, but most agree that there’s actually something back there. And based on the angle and distances involved, they can not account for what kind of object or creature would produce this image. Certainly it’s not a human as we know them, and it’s no kind of animal currently accounted for by science.
Additionally, we examined the spot where the object in question would have been situated, and found deep gouges in the tops of the gravestones. They seemed to correspond with some kind of tallon of claw marks, but they do not match up with any known animals. Also, note that the ambient temperature is 2 degrees lower on that spot that every where else within a 10 foot radius.
So is this some kind of creature? A ghost? A demon? Or just a trick of the light on an old camera in a dark place? Only you can decide what you will believe...

How do you tell a friend that you had a dream about her? And that in that dream, her friend "Tina" busts on you two while you’re messing around. And then Tina tells you guys that your friend’s boyfriend "Jason" is dead? And you turn to your friend and hesitently say "I just had a dream that Jason died..."
Is that the kind of thing you just keep to yourself?

I was rather surprised to see how cordial and even friendly her demeanor was in interacting with me. Apparently the axiom that Time heals all wounds had some bearing in reality, in this case. Greatly contrasted with the cold look and refusal to speak I was subjected to when last we crossed paths, she was now almost eager to talk to me. Since then, we had been incommunicado, with only our thoughts and memories; she had moved several times; she had had her heart broken again; she had gained and lost 3 or more jobs. And now somehow all these hardships and goings on had made her more willing, more receptive.
We sat face to face, very close to each other. We were talking for a short while. I don’t remember what we talked about at all, up to this point, and I don’t think it really mattered. I was just staring at this beautiful woman I had almost made my wife. All that seemed a lifetime ago... She had gone back to blonde. There was just the slightest hint of a light brown at her roots, but it looked good. her bangs were substantially longer than she had historically kept them. In the back is was much shorter than up front, and she had it up in bobby pins, so that the hair would splay out in every direction, in discrete sections. This was a good look on her. She had lost some weight, too. I had a suspicion this was from poverty and depression as much as anything else, but she had a healthy glow to her. Perhaps that was an illusion of the way her smile lit up her face; that was a good look for her too.
I began to lean in closer to her as we talked. "I missed you so much." No other thought nor concept held any sway in the recesses of my mind at that point. I could see her look down at her lap, with a small smile on her face, as she took on the faintest hint of crimson. She then looked up at me with her eyes, her head unmoving, with that familiar loving look she had given me so many times in some other reality which only existed in history books; the look she had perfected while spending time with me, when I would tell her beautiful things no one had ever told her, but she had always deserved to hear.
Now I was in so close our faces almost touched. I reached out both arms, and pulled her close, so that I felt the soft warmth of her chest against mine, and her silken cheek on mine. My lips were by her ear, and I whispered feeble words to try and explain a million and one things, built up over years, so complex as to be unfathomable, yet so simple a small child could grasp the concept.
I pulled back and we looked into each other’s eyes. It was at this point we realized we wanted to be together again. It was inevitable that it would happen. Caught up in the moment though we were, she managed to keep one foot pragmatically anchored in cynical reality. "We won’t repeat any of our mistakes from the past. It’s just you and I from here on, or forget about it."
I nodded to this in earnest agreement. She seemed apprehensive and skeptical, searching for some reassurance that she wasn’t setting herself up for a huge crushing blow once again. But the truth of the matter was that I would sooner cast myself off a bridge into freeway traffic than hurt her again. I hoped the fervent look on my face would project this emotion, but she was waiting for something more explicit. "I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you since..." I made a few calculations and went over a time line of events and dates in my head, "since january."
She donned a look which reflected her understandably jaded skepticism. "That sounds like a line to me."
"January 1998!" After I said it, I realized it was a mistake. In citing the whole time I had known her, I’d also described the period in which we had hurt each other so very many times, and I knew this was how she would take it. "Look," I said, "there is no one else on the face of the planet I love more than you. There is nothing--nothing--I wouldn’t do for you if you asked it of me. I love you and I miss you and I need you."
That was that. We held each other for a very long time, amidst intermittent tears and gentle kisses on faces and necks. She would be visiting Chicago very soon, but she would return shortly, and we would begin the task of getting to know each other again, rebuilding trust, be just being there for each other, as friends.
---------------------------------
And then I woke up.

I just remembered what it’s like
to be with someone you love
After so very long
struggling to cling to the memory
Unable to see the obscured image
Unable to feel the now numb sensations
like a distant dream
You’re sure it felt so real,
but you can’t recall why
But I remembered
Crisis Averted
But that old recovered memory
A rellic from the neglected past
Like a faded photo album
Has lost some of its lustre
And instead of the warm feeling
of sleepy days and restless nights
I’m just disappointed
With myself, with my life,
that I let everything go
Repeating the same pattern of hurt
time after time
with everyone I ever got close to
Realizing only too late what I’d lost
and that I desperately wanted it back
And that every move I had made
from that fateful moment onward
was a wild grab at attaining it again,
arms flailing mindlessly to keep my head above water
But, of course, I fucked it up.
Every time.
Of course...

I’m always sad
The past few days I’ve been very excited and almost happy because my friend was coming down from Canada. That’s the only thing that’s really gotten to me in the past week or so
but she couldn’t come
she would’ve been here tomorrow
and I can’t tell you how fucking close to tears it made me at the idea of having someone to fall asleep next to. Or how close I am now that I realize that of course there wont be
I had this idealized image of being happy with someone there to talk to and fall asleep next to, and wake up with. And just someone around. Someone to just be there. Didn’t matter what we did or said. And it was almost romantic, this interaction between she and I, but without the same kinds of social attachments or sexuality or those kinds of things
in this world which never existed

For just an instant I lived that hypothetical moment in my head: Picking you up and spinning around a few quick cycles, and then we tumble onto the couch. And we’re raising a din, an excited ball of laughter and fervent screams. As your hair settles, it picks up a gleam from the rays of the sun through the window, and your eyes glow from behind it as you look up at me with a smile. And I have this stupid grin on my face, because if you ever smiled at me I couldn’t help but beam it back at you, along with all the affection welling up inside of me. And then I give you a little kiss on your perfect, glowing cheek, and we hold eachother close because it just feels so good to have you there...
To have someone. Anywhere.

This week’s short term work load is over with .. yay!
My senior project is in full force. We went public this morning by getting a few pinholes in the cal poly firewall. Check out the site!!
http://san.csc.calpoly.edu/We have a full x86/ppc/amd64 debian package mirror and a gentoo distfiles/rsync available to whoever can get on the internet. It’s pretty sweet. The rsync port isn’t open yet, but that should be there by next week, I hope. I’m already utilizing the SAN as my source mirror for gentoo. It’s pretty sweet. :) ... and, very exciting! :D

Ryan and I got the SAN just about completely working this evening!!! It’s so exciting... about months of brutal battle with this massive piece of equipment, we have it by the reigns now. We already started loading all kinds of linux distributions on it--even the entire 2.6 kernel source tree. :) Most of you reading this are like, "huh?" but that’s ok... I just needed to vent a little bit. We have a few more things to do, like get the rest of the drives online by buying a cable and installing it. Then the next step is to get the SAN registered with cal poly to have it’s own name and address on the internet... after that, we’re going to request making it available for the public to use. :) EXCITING stuff! :D It’ll probably be something like
http://san.csc.calpoly.edu ... of course, that doesn’t work yet, but that’s what we’re hoping for!

I haven’t updated my journal in a loooong time... I’ve been insanely busy with school. I can’t believe I’m actually managing my work load decently. Week 2 is upon me... 8.5 more to go until school’s out! I can do it...
It is April 6th.. well, here, it almost is, but in India (where it matters) it is!! :) Happy 32nd Birthday Bro!!! :D wooo hooo!!! YEA!! 8-P
I don’t remember if I ever wrote about, but there’s been a problem with my schedule, which as of late, hasn’t been resolved. I’m on the verge right now though! I have two minor time conflicts in my schedule, so I turned in a form to get one of them resolved... at the top of this form says: "only one of these forms may be used per quarter -- NO EXCEPTIONS!" Now, I assumed that since it said "NO EXCEPTIONS" that I couldn’t use two, so I went on to explore other ways to get the requirements that I needed... this dragged on for about 2 weeks now, and to make a long story short, it ends up that there is an exception to that rule. How bout that.. My scenario is one of them. *major sigh* ... one should have asked about that. So, I think one of the major things I’ve learned at Cal Poly is that "rules were meant to be broken." :-P So stupid.. anyway, it should all work out tomorrow when I officially turn in the form.
In other unrelated news, my website is down for the time being because I’m in the process of transferring my domain to a different registrar. It should be back up by next week at the latest. Well, I gotta do some homework. It’s crazy that it’s so light out at 6pm! :P nuts..

grr... I really am going to write about Havasu soon. It’s been nagging me, so I’m going to do it before school starts. I spent a lot of time with my sweet Alyssa this spring break, which has been very nice. Yesterday we got our cars’ oil changed, picked up some new headphones for her cd player, made waffles for breakfast (with fresh strawberries and whipped cream), a big sandwich for lunch, decorated some eggs for easter, and another smaller sandwich for dinner. Fun! :) I spent a good 10-15 minutes drawing detailed outlines of Earth’s continents
without a map as a reference:
North America,
South America,
Europe,
Africa,
Asia,
Australia, and Antarctica (not very interesting picture; so it’s not included). The X’s represent where I’ve travelled. There’s a ton in North America, so I didn’t include them all. :) I made it by doing the outlines in green crayon, then filling in the outlines completely, then I dunked the egg in blue dye where I soaked for like 10 minutes "creating" the oceans... What do you think David? Do I pass? :D
Tomorrow’s easter (Happy Easter!), so I’m going up to Paso Robles to go to church and hang out with Alyssa’s family... Should be fun. More to report tomorrow on that.
I went surfing with Jacob a few days ago (and, no, we never made down to Baja this time spring break) at the pit at The Rock in morro. Let me set the stage: howling onshore wind, blown out waves, small/weak swell, and frozen water... why did we even go? well, we did because we were desperate for some surf. :-P Both of us got some decent waves, but the conditions really did suck.
Filed my taxes several days ago ... only owed the feds about $85 this year. I’m finishing up Alyssa’s taxes and she’s getting a phat refund, which will be nice for her.
You’ll also noticed the latest feature to my emails (if you get emails from me)... the Mood at the top under the date; neat huh? :)
I put up a tentative school schedule here:
http://www.cappaberra.com/classes.php?quarter=spring05So, after my application to Google, I’m still waiting to hear from them... considering how long I should wait until I follow up. I also applied to a company in Costa Mesa for another Test Engineer position. I’ll post more once I find out more.
Once again, the Havasu details are coming...
I promise! :)

Today was my last day of classes for my last winter quarter here at Cal Poly... *sniff* I woke up at 6am this morning to get some more work done before my 9am class, which I did get done. It’s amazing what happens with some sleep under one’s belt. More ideas, the logic, creativity, etc... Finals are coming up fast. I have one on Monday night, a couple on Thursday, and one Wednesday. There’s two that I’m somewhat worried about, but I can plenty of time to do more preparing.
Yesterday, which seems like an eternity ago, I went surfing in the early morning (~7am). Robert picked me up around then and we headed off to UCSB for some fun surf. Many many years ago, he actually went to UCSB and surf most everywhere around there EXCEPT Coal Oil Point, since it didn’t seem surfable way back then for some bizarre reason. Well, now it’s heavily surfed, and the spot impressed him, which is saying a lot. The only major problem was that there were TONS of people in the water... 15 up at the point... another 10 just below the point... then another 20 or so scattered down the cove. Once on a wave, it was awesome, but getting a wave was challenging with the crowds.
what else ... Southpark season 9 started. :P weee. I’m gonna be super busy through next week. Keep it tuned...

I was really looking forward to going to The Ranch tomorrow... I would love to see the huge waves. As of right now, it’s not happening, and I’m trying to decide what to do tomorrow for surfing. Santa Barbara would be amazing, I think. Coal Oil Point is going to be going off. Tides are perfect, waves are big, .. i donno. I’m in such a funk right now. My resume is upsetting me, since it’s hard to get it formatted just the way I want it in latex (a typesetting language), I’m not going to The Ranch tomorrow, my senior project is nothing but frustration, finals are coming up and adding some stress, ... hm, that’s about it I guess. AGH! I’m going insane... another sign I really need to surf.

This morning, Alyssa and I went to The Rock for some surfing. It was really fun -- I helped her do some more learning, and then I went out to surf on the outside for a bit. It was big. I mean REALLY big... "nothing I couldn’t handle," I thought. I did get a few waves that were overhead. There were three of us surfing wayyy out there. One guy went under a wave and snapped his leash, so he began swimming in to get his board. I tried to save the board, but couldn’t make it to it in time before the next set rocked us. So, it was just me and this other guy.
After a little lull in the waves, this double-overhead+ set came out of nowhere and broke maybe a few hundred feet in front of us. It sucked BIG TIME... ditched the board... dove down as far under as I could go... hung out under water for about 10 seconds, then popped up my head to another set wave breaking really close to me. This went on for another 3 waves or so, until I got back on my board and forcefully rode some gnarly white-water back to shore. No fun. But a strangely exciting experience. I didn’t think I was anywhere close to drowning, so stop thinking that. :) I realized when I was changing out of my suit that I would have totally not gone out in those waves have I just drove up to check them out... they were enormous. Occasionally, but more often than not, the waves on the outside would get amplified significantly from the "side-waves" that bounced off The Rock, creating a huge peak that sucks up and throws its lip out causing a great deal of vertical and horizontal energy.
Meanwhile, Alyssa was poised over on The Rock watching my every move, but she never saw me take any of the big waves... just me getting pounded over and over again. :-P Oh well.. next time I guess. ;)

I’m sooo tired right now... I’m gonna go to bed any moment I think. I’ve been to The Ranch the past two days, but only surfed one. On Wednesday, Alyssa, her dogs, and I drove down to meet my uncle to surf, but we were greeted with SE winds -- which is the worst wind direction for the ranch. It was super onshore, blown out, stormy, kinda rainy, and cold.. also, the wind destroyed the swell--it was pretty much flat.
Today on the other hand, was awesome; except for the getting-up-early part. Robert calls me at 5:30am and shouts in a pleasant/funny kind of way: "Get Up!" ... so, I rose and started getting ready to meet him there at 7am. I left while it was still dark out around 5:50am, and headed south. I got there a few minutes before 7am, and was greeted by sunny weather, a very light offshore wind, and a very decent size swell. Robert and I surfed with about 6 other people at Big Drakes for roughly two hours. It was awesome! The sets were roughly 5-7ft with the occasional 8 footers. The walls were big, juicy, and delicious. :) I got tons of waves, and Robert did too. I made it back to slo around noon where I helped Alyssa do some last minute studying for her o-chem exam today (yuk).
So, sleep is sounding very lovely.. I think I’m going to crash.

Wow, so, it was *stormy*... The entire time on my way there, while I was getting ready, and while I started paddling out, I couldn’t figure out why I was doing what I was doing.. seriously.. I think I’m addicted to surfing. :-P It’s nice being addicted to something that keeps me sane and is good for my body, but man; the weather sucked, I was somewhat lazy, and curling up in front of my computer all warm and cozy sounded better to my mind. Somehow, my body just kept going, and at the end, it was fun, but it felt like a hurricane enveloped Morro Bay.
It was big-time offshore again along with plenty of overhead sets. I was worried about it being much smaller than the past few days, but there wasn’t any problem with size. I got out there, but had trouble getting my first wave: either in the wrong place or too far out. So, I kept paddling around, fighting the current, and placing myself so I could get a good one. Today was the one day that I loved having a hood, except I forgot it at home!! ahh... d’oh! :-P sucks.. it was still fun anyway. I got a lot of good waves, and best of all, it started pouring sheets of rain (aka "cats and dogs") for the last 20 of so minutes I was out. When I got out, the wind made the rain horizontal (literally), and it pieced my face and hands with a pin-pricking force.
Once I got back to my van, I carefully put my board down so that it wouldn’t get blown away into the storm, and opened my van’s hatch for some convenient shelter. It was awesome-- I purposely parked my van backwards because I knew the wind would be coming out of the south, not to mention the rain. If I had parked normally, I would have had to deal with rain/wind blowing directly into my van (ick). This way, not only was I sheltered from the nasty rain, I didn’t have to deal with the gale force winds either. *pats self on back* ;-D I changed and climbed into my van and sat there amused with myself for a minute before I headed home.

s/my own filth/writing a tech resume
The Hard Part of

lanthinel++ a metric shitload for expert resume advice. Wow. Every detail I overlooked?
Bam, spotted, with a correction offered. If I get this position, even a secondary, it’s in no small part due to him.
If you only knew how badly I wanted to taste Antarctic snow, you’d understand why I’m up until 6am on a monday morning, writing a resume for Raytheon.

Olympia: The rumors of my demise were premature. I’m back.
The rest of the world: I think I took a wrong turn. After 5 weeks and two continents, I ended up back in Olympia. I’m guessing my GPS needs new batteries.
A belated happy Groundhog Day to my dearest Renée. Your gift shall be in the post this next week, I hope.
I’m once again pondering my future fate. My ass (and much of the connected bone and tissue) belongs to my chem prof, lab project, and a slightly awkward existence in this research project (for which I’ve lost most of my enthusiasm), for the next 10 weeks.
Thankfully, however, I’m already skipping town this weekend, in search of a sea breeze (not the beverage) and a bit of peace and quiet.
Photos and a more verbose breakdown of the last month or few shall be had sometime soon, probably. I also haven’t been reading journals, et cetera reliably for the last month, so if something significant happened in your world which I probably missed but you think I should know about, comment within.
I’ve been told that the customary thing to say at this point is "It’s good to be back." Maybe it is...

I doubt any of you watch this show, but I’ll put this behind a cut anyway.

Ugh, this show is so stupid. I dunno why I watch these things. Jen turned down both guys. I don’t know why people go on these shows, it never works out for any of them. Are any of these reality tv couples still together? I think the only one might be Trista and the guy she chose. Or did they break up too? Anyway, I need to stop watching these silly shows.

RECORDING IN KING CITY!!!!!
there is sexy cam slinking his sexy ass out to record some sexy vocal tracks.
there is warren reading a book with a giant drum on his lap. why you ask? because he is warren.
the 2 motherfucking p.i.m.p.s kicking back after we finished all out shit.
this is warren and i trying to decide whether or not i could do a headstand on my drum stool, eventually e decided i couldnt and saved us a trip to the emergency room.
there is dj, the tricked out fool behind such bands as The Bi-Polar Bears, Body Massage, and yes even A Prankster and A Gangster. this kid knows his shit, so listen up when my man speaks. his hair does look kinda silly though, doesnt it.
time for food. now i didnt put this pic in to show you glenn and warren stuffing their respective mouths, i put it in because in the background there is an awesome dood with an awesome mullet and you cant see it in the pic but he has an awesome hole in is awesome crotch and when he walked around we almost saw his awesome balls. awesome.
warren and i had a fight with the bouncy balls in safeway.
we both won and that little girl and her mom lost. yay us!
then i went on a helicopter ride. there were two buttons in it and it made authentic helicopter sounds.
SHALOM TOWN BIATCHES!!!! for those of you who read my last story, this is the store i talked about. basically the only clothing store in king city. it has a jewish name and is run by a korean guy with the same last name as me. and when i was younger i used to buy straight edge belt buckles and dickes pants there and he would always as if my dad was korean because i have a korean last name.
back to recording!
after about 11 hours of playing the same songs over and over we slowly started drifting into dementia.

it seems the only time im not anti dancing is when im in a grocery store or listening to playback.

then i made the 2 greatest discoveries ever.
1. THE ACCORDION!!!! i would not have survived that weekend had i not found this.
and 2. A GIANT SANDWICH! i attacked this sandwich like a badger mother protecting her cubs.
on last accordion shot. look at the pure joy on my face.
and finally the obligitory myspace photo. this was when i was sleeping uner mr. grahams desk.

not very well written, but fun none the less.
Since I?ve moved from King City it has grown and become more corporate. Somehow a blockbuster video weaseled its way into our tiny mundane little community. I mean what have we come to? I remember going into JC Pennys every Friday to try to get my hands on one of the 2 copies of whatever new release they had gotten. Yeah, I said JC Penny?s. you see king city had no video rental stores for a long period of time. There was a tv repair store (Village TV) that had a collection of 300 of the finest horror/sci fi films that you have never heard of, and for good reason too. Then along came JC Penny?s. where do I start. Well, king city really has no clothing or department stores aside from Shalom Town, a gangster clothing store with a jewish name that has the finest selection of oversized Solo, Ben Davis, and Dickies pants this side of east LA. They can also custom fit you with an assortment of belt buckles displaying your favorite gang sign, alien head or my personal favorite a marijuana leaf with the slogan, ?get your own bag?. Now if you?re into the cholo look then Shalom Town is the place for you, for the rest of the people they either had to drive to Salinas 45 minutes away or use king city?s JC Penny mail order store. It wasn?t even a real store it was a building where you would come to pick up the clothes or other items that you ordered out of the JC Penny Catalog. Why anyone would need a place to come pick up the items they mail ordered from a catalog is beyond me. This place was completely empty except for a desk in the back and occasionally some boxes of items people ordered. After a while the owner decided to make use of his extra space and noticed he has a collection of movies taking up room in his house, so he decided to take them into his place of business and begin renting them out. Soon it caught on and he began getting new releases. He would get between 1 and 3 copies of the latest movie depending on how big the movie was (we got 5 copies of Titanic!). Finally in late 2000 JC Penny?s decided to jump on the digital bandwagon again (they were a little hesitant following their brief and unsuccessful voyage into the world of Laser Discs) and start up a dvd collection. Now this whole dvd concept was completely foreign to us king city bumpkins. I mean how could a flat circular device have a movie on it? And how can it be better quality than vhs? And how does it fit in my vcr? My family had just made the big transition from beta to vhs, and we sure as hell didn?t want to make another transition. But, we finally got lured in by JC Penny?s wonderful and vast library of titles. For the first 2 months that they rented dvds the only 3 movies they had were The Hurricane, Play it to the Bone, and Dracula 2000. now don?t get me wrong, these are 3 of the greatest films of this or any other half of the century, but after renting Dracula 2000 for 23 straight days, I was ready for something new. Slowly but surely they gained a respectable small town dvd collection and had a top notch selection of various Cameron Diaz hits. It was also around this time that they expanded their video game rentals beyond that of Nintendo only games. Now I don?t mean Nintendo only products, i.e. Nintendo 64, super Nintendo, I mean the original 1986 Nintendo. This worked out great for me up till about 1992, when I got a game system that has more than 2 buttons on the controller. I love Nintendo, I still play Nintendo games today, but how many times can I rent Bad Dudes, The Double Dragon series, and Excitebike before I go insane? I currently live in Santa Maria. In addition to our 2 blockbuster videos, 2 Hollywood videos, public library video section, and various liquor stores with video rental sections, we also have a 10 screen movie theatre, a drive in movie theatre, a mini golf course with go karts etc., lots and lots of huge parks, a badass lazer tag arena, a couple skate parks, lots of nice coffee shops, and various other entertaining things to do. Why do I bring this up? Well, a little while ago Santa Maria had the highest teen pregnancy rate per capita. When asked why the teens said, ?there is nothing to do in this town.? In response to them I submit this paper and a challenge, I challenge them to live 18 years in king city and see how many children they can crank out. God bless America, god bless a free Iraq.

ben and i had 2 day long easter celebration with various visitors on the way. enjoy
EASTER SUNDAY MORNING
we woke up and ben opened his easter package from his parents.
then he talked on the phone.
and talked on the phone.
and talked on the phone. ben talks on the phone a lot.
then we sat down to watch the hip hop bible video i got at the 99 cent store.
this is our reaction to it.
then we each went to our respective work places.
EASTER SUNDAY NIGHT
its easter sunday night and we did what any non christian with a piggy bank full of coins would do, PLAYED BLACKJACK!
this is our blackjack table we bought from the thrift store.
this is quite an embarassing situation, you see, i misunderstood the rules of the game and thought we had to take our pants off to play. luckily ben set me straight before too long.
this is steve dealing.
and i collect the winnings. i think we all basically broke even except for ben who lost a lot of money.
EASTER MONDAY AFTERNOON/NIGHT
you see ben and i are quite poor, so we decided to wait till monday to have an easter celebration/egg hunt. you see, that way we could get eggs and candy for half price. so here we go
its easter monday and ben is so excited!
very excited!
this is us doing our holiday tradition of me standing on bens back while he eats peeps and looks like a creep.
then we hid easter eggs. instead of candy we decided to hide mystery objects for each other.
this is ben finding an egg with a wrist band to match mine. because we rock!
then i found one with advertisements for gay pornography. i wasnt as excited.
this is one of the eggs ben found filled with a mystery liquid.
then ben found one with nothing.
then i found one with condoms!
then ben found another one with nothing.
then i found one with the cap to bens nasal spray!
then we did our happy easter dance
its a long dance.
and that was our easter. hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

i went to LBC with Kate to have band practice last nite.
i was rocking my new soccer kicks.
kate came and sat in the corner and stuck drumsticks down my pants as i played.
i love how warren is pearing out from behind glenn in this pic.

i was really tired. look at my giant adams apple.
warren looked drunk and angry.
then he did drunk angry gymnastics.
we were too loud for kate to make phone calls.

steve, casey, ben, david, tom, and i have all been working hard on a short film that we hope to send to many many festivals. these are some on set photos of the shoot so far. its a nice little story, we have amazing footage so far, its a skeleton crew of some of the coolest people i know, i couldnt be happier. the only downside is the amazing amounts of poison oak.
this is casey showing a local rooster who’s boss.
this is right above the creek we are filming at.
this is a homemade dolly we have. it works great and allows us to get amazing and smooth push in shots.
this is one of the locations on the creek. the movie begins and ends here.
most of those plants surrounding us is poison oak/ivy.
this is us trying to wipe all remnants of poison oak off our bodys.
this is tom taking a little sit down on set.
this is us trying to plan out one of the more complicated shots. i think it took about 1.5 hours to get this shot and we did about 11 takes or so.
this is my favorite picture, but this scene got cut out of the film.
and finally, this is a picture of me trying to jump over our reclining chair, but instead breaking it and getting my ankle trapped inside it for 5 minutes.

that picture i posted of me doing a handstand was actually taken the day before my birthday. i bet casey that i could learn how to walk accross the room on my hands in 15 minutes. i lost. casey took pics to document my loss. some of them are neat, some are homo erotic. some are just superb.
casey tried to give me some friendly advice, but it looked weird so i said, "whats wrong with your arm?" and he said, "im a robot!" and we laughed.
this is me starting out. its difficult to get yourself straight up and down.
i fell.
here i go again. doesnt it look like im hardcore dancing?
i had success in small doses. in this picture it almost looks like i have forearm muscles. almost.
look at that sexy milky white skin.
this shot is for the ladies. the most erotic picture ever.

i got a new monitor, so the old one had to go.
steve taught me how to lift the monitor over my head and smash it on the train tracks.
right when i was about to smash it we realized how bad of an idea it was to smash it on the train tracks. this is a really cool picture though.
this picture is funny because ben is scratching his balls.
then we finally threw it!!!
then ben went to town on it with a baseball bat.
look at bens face!!!! thats the face of ultimate intensity!!
then some crazy dood with a rifle yelled at us and we, like the pussies we are, took off runing. this picture was taken during the chaos.
the end.
p.s. tomorrow is my birthday!!!!

this is a picture of steve and i playing mario party, he beat me that time, but never again. last nite i did the unthinkable. firstly this shows you how completly anti social i am. i see some people write in their livejournals about how they dont want to go out or claim they are anti social, i am the king. last nite, friday nite, while people all over the world are getting drunk, puking their guts out, and screwing people, i was home alone playing a 50 turn game of mario party 6. it is perhaps the greatest friday nite ive ever had. some people may call me a dork, i prefer to say i have an irational fear of meeting and touching new people. i remember once there was this film fest and a bunch of my friends and friends family went to it. now i dont do well in public, especially when there are a lot of people and especially when i know a lot of the people there. so i basically ignored everyone and they all got pissed off at me, including casey’s mom who thinks im a creep. ok, story time is over. back to mario party.

bands worth seeing at coachella.
day 1.
cafe tacuba
sage francis
bloc party
mercury rev
secret machines
M83 (maybe, could be fucking boring)
four tet
mf doom
buck 65
day 2.
arcade fire
perceptioniosts
sixtoo
beans
matmos
wow, this coachella looks pretty shitty. most of the best acts there are hip hop, and i can only take so much of hip hop before someone shoots me. im also sick of crappy old bands like bauhaus, nine inch nails, weezer (weezer fucking sucks), new order, gang of four, and cocteau twins. i mean some of them have some good stuff, but who would want to see them now? way past their prime, they should be doing the state fair circuits. i dont know, just one mans opnion.

one time when dj, freddy, matt, and jon were visiting me we wanted to go swimming. i dont have a pool. we noticed motels have pools. we went to this ghetto motel to go swimming. we got out there and started to get in the water when this man comes out and says he is from the motel and we asked if we are registered guests. jon instantly says, "no, lets go." but then freddy calmly says, "yes, of course we are, we are in room 314." i was very impressed by freddy’s answer at first until i noticed what the motel employee noticed immediatly, there is no room 314 and there is no 3rd floor. this man then asked us again to leave, and we were a bunch of crack ass birds, so of course we werent gonna leave. he then walked into a room nearby. a few minutes later he walked out and was accompanied by 5 giant mexican gangster looking fellows who looked rather angry that we were swimming in their motel swimming pool. the man said, "im gonna ask you one more time to leave." i thought it was about time to be heading out, and he did ask rather politely, so we left, before we died. we still had a hankering for some swimming so we went cross town to the holiday inn. they didnt have very high pool security, so we got to swimming pretty quickly and easily. the only other people at the pool were two nice little european women accompanied by they incredibly hot mother. freddy, jon, and i, all thought we actually had a chance with this gorgeous french tickler and were all strutting what god gave us. dj and matt really couldnt give two shits. ok, now we get to the best part. we all got in the spa and the two little children were in there too. we are sitting back, talking loudly about "cool" things to impress euro mom and she is occasionally looking up, probably to check on her children, but id like to think its because she wanted to sex me up. anyways, out of nowhere dj and matt decide to have a pec flexing contest. you know, pec’s (chest muscles). so they are intensly staring at each other and flexing with all their might back and forth bacn and forth back and forth, it looked like a sweaty hairy grandfather clock. it was hypnotizing and nausiating. they are locked on each others chest, both flexing non stop till one flinches, we all gather round to see who will back down first. as soon as the contest is reaching its peak, euro mom looks up and see’s, well, this disgusting display of pornographic chest flexing. she instantly jumps up and runs to the spa, grabs her kids, and takes off with a look of terror on her face. all of our erections for euro mom are instantly gone. the moral of the story, if you are trying to score with a hot european older lady, never bring dj and matt along, because their tit flexing contest’s will cock block you everytime.

ben and i had a wrestiling match, it was a hoot!
ben is a worthy match, he has guts and furry.
but right as he was getting the upper hand he, for some unknown reason, started skanking, and yelling, "pick it up pick it up!"
then, mid "oi", i grabbed ben and began my puma like attack.
we struggled very sexily back and forth. one man had to get the upper hand and the other would be forever a bottom only.
then i pulled out my secret weapon, my ass!!!! while he was distracted by this ripe round thing of beauty i made my move.
in one swift motion i threw ben to the ground and pounced on him like a very sexy puma pouncing on its half as sexy prey.
judging by the look of sheer terror on bens face, id say i would be the clear winner.
ben fought well and i admire his fortitude, but there can be only one puma man, and i is he.

tonight the body massage played a show tonight. we played 2 songs, 1 of them was an original song of ours that was 20 minutes long, the other was "sweet home alabama" sung by the newest member of body massage, a young vibrant american named Ben Begley. we didnt really play very good and no one really liked us, but we kinda dont care. to us, playing our songs is very selfish, we really enjoy playing the songs and such, but no one else really does. we are plenty ok with that though. the last 17 seconds of our original song sounded really good though. the next band, i forgot what they were called, was my freind pete’s band. pete’s real name is pat, but i call him pete because he looks exactly like the older brother in Pete and Pete. anyway, his band was metal as fuck and i was so tempted to throw up the metal hand and tickle the sky, but i got fries instead. the last band we stayed to see was Raking Bombs. they are from vancouver and are unbelievable. they are one of the most interesting amd fascinating bands ive seen and/or heard in sometime. they are all amazing mucisians and such creative song writers. they have to be seen(scene) to be believed. then we got some burritos from TA’s and mine was soooo spicy. i saw some cool people too. amanda, caro, harmony, pete, kelsey, p, lawrence, and garrett. also, in the works is an elkins/body massage collaberation, keep your ears to the street.

So Ive been thinking. if i take this job as assistant winemaker with this awesome winery, it will open many doors for me later. i will be able to go anywhere in the world and work a harvest, not as an intern. this is really overwhelming. kind of a dent in my travel plans. but it might be for the better. i would start august 15th. which means that i wont be able to go to spain and meet up with jen and george. hmmmm.
so last night i went over to juan´s house and he bought us beers. we just sat and talked for about 2 hours. then i snuck carolina out and we rode bikes to this other town called san jose, where theres this house that sells liquor and bought two bottles of pisco sour (i still have a headache). it was a fun night. drunk bike riding is dangerous. this family seems to have taken me in. they are wonderful people. i am invited to juan jr.s b-day, and a baptismal. i have to get presents. i feel very lucky. im all emotional this week. stupid period. every fucking month. juan jr. is hilarious. hes only 15 and hes such a rico suave. ahhh but he has so much to learn. he tries to pose all sexy when i take pictures. i just shake my head. i guess this works on chilean women.
today im going on another tour, as my training to be a guide. this job is gonna help me stay here longer, but i need to tell them that i have to quit soon. by the end of june. so i can travel around in july, go to the amazon with lillian at the end of july and travel back to the states early august. i guess now i have a plan.
im gonna be a fucking winemaker.

So my job is changing. I will now be working for the visitors center giving tours. its a light cushy job with more pay, mas luca, super bueno. but it will be boring. it gets tiring saying the same thing over and over to people. i will have to get creative. im working on getting a job in spain. my old boss has some connections, and the guy im replacing here at the visitors center knows a guy. everyone seems to know a guy, but contacting that guy is the hard part.
So it seems that my brother is in the same position i was. he is the most unlucky person i know, besides carina. shit just seems to happen at the worst times for him. the little town he lives in is dragging him down. he needs to get out and see the world. as he was moving out of his appartment, a martini glass broke in his hand and he had to get stiches. now he has to see a hand surgen. and his ex-girlfriend, (she´s got really big boobs, totally his type)wants him to take her with him. hes got to get out! even though it sucked to leave all my friends, im so glad i left the country. this place is so beautiful. i know i say that a lot. but im really so thankful. and even though i dont talk to some friends, like maria and aline, i know we´ll hang out again, weve known eachother since we were 13. goddamn thats a long time.
Carola, juan´s daughter who is about 19, she and i are are gonna work on a bottle of whisky tonight. we´ll see how that goes. for all you alkies, a bottle of johnny walker black is about 8 mil pesos. about 6 bucks. you are so jealous.
In the supermarket, they have announcers that walk around interviewing people about what they are buying and why, and they talk about the sales going on for the day. its kinda entertaining to watch. they have this monster truck madness kinda voice.
Omar and I are planing to travel down south for a week sometime later. after i quit. or they fire me. they tend to like to fire people. two guys who i became really good friends with got axed. and 3 others too. you do one thing wrong here and your done. ive never been fired from a job. i think it would suck. but what the hell, im in chile. the worst thing that could happen to me is that i have to come home. where my friends and tofu are.

Corten el hueveo, huevona! Estoy viviendo in Chile! Loca!
Every so often I realize I´m living and working in Chile. this is extremely cool. i can see snow on the andes from my house. they´ve started to machine harvest here because its supposed to rain on tuesday. which means that harvest will end next week. boo. but seriously its kicking my ass. i think ive lost about 15 lbs. or kilos, i have no idea anymore, the metric system is confusing me, stupid american system. why couldnt we just be like everyone else, then everything would be a lot easier.
they use 1 liter of sulfer for 1 ton of grapes. Thats a lot. my nose is constantly running because of breathing in all the sulfer.
I think that men in the US should start winking more often, latin men do it really well. especially chilenos. and start taking up the custom of kissing a girl on the cheek when you see her. Take note from Rodo... cause we like it. In fact, try and listen to any prince album, and well... you´ll get the picture. it really isnt all that hard.
oh yeah, i posted more pics.

i had a chilean hot dog yesterday. with out the dog. they come with mayo, mustard, katsup, tomato, avocado, and hot sauce. it tastes exactly the way you would think it would. Brazillian hot dogs come with mashed potatos and potato chips on top. weird.
they put avocado on everything here. its so cheap, they are about 10 cents US for one.
the chocolate here sucks. my mom is sending a package of tofu and dark chocolate and socks. yay!
i apparently have a job offer when i get back to the US. Assistant winemaker at Copain. copainwines.com they make awesome organic wine. high end stuff around the 60 dollar range. this is really exciting! but i want to go to spain in august for the harvest. so we´ll see what happens. things are really starting to move fast for me.
for some crazy reason i have the whole day off today. gonna head into santa cruz and try and meet up with omar.
the sunsets here are awesome. reminds me of san jose, CA. because there is so much smog and dirt roads everywhere, the sunsets are red and orange and so beautiful. im taking tons of pictures.
you know when you have your hands full and you need to point to something. you do it with your chin or forehead? here they do it with their lips. it looks really funny. try it in the mirror.
the friends i have now are amazing. thanks for the letters and emails and all the support. you feel like family to me.

Happy Semana Santa! I have the day off. Except I have to work on sunday. Oh well. I finally have some pictures up you can look at. Hopefully you got the email. snapfish.com, ndtalia@hotmail.com, password: fosho. So today is a lazy day. I can´t go anywhere because the collectivos and taxis aren´t running and it´s a long walk to the main road. I don´t know how good I am at hich hiking. I wish I could go to the beach...
This week kicked my ass. On Tuesday a girl got fired because she let the sulfer drip too fast into the tank. I actually did the same thing about 2 hours later. But really it was Claudio´s fault. He told me to make it go faster. I seriously hate this guy. He is so completly lazy and he has some competition going on with me, that he hasn´t really let me in on. I actually can´t stand to be around him at all. My roommate Nancy has heard the same thing from other people, so I´m glad I´m not alone. Any day I don´t have to work with him is a good day. This is good because he´s the only one who speaks english, so I can learn more. So yesterday I was told to go talk to him to get the information on the grapes I was going to recieve. How to fill out the forms, the tonnage, etc. So I go ask him,¨So I´m recieving grapes today.¨he says ¨sure.¨ I say,¨so do you want to tell me about it?¨he says, ¨sure.¨ long pause. (motherfucker) he says, ¨30 tons.¨and that´s all he tells me. So fuck it. I´d rather try and speak to someone I can only half-way understand than this ass-hole. because the grapes are more important that whatever the hell he has going on with his ego. ok enough with the rant.
I have some friends down here. Melinda and Joshua who I met at the Poet in santa cruz (usa) through carina. they are camping and hanging around and will be heading up to bolivia through the inca trail. i think it would be awesome if i could join them. i dont know about this job though. it will probably be another month and a half till harvest is over. i really want to get to Peru to see Lilian who is in the peace core. i don´t know if i can do all this. Because I want to get to spain in September to meet up with George, and Jen. ARrrgghh. there is so much I don´t want to miss out on. I want to try and buy some stuff too. I don´t just want to bring back some duty-free liquor and toblerone.
Last night was fun. Even though I was super tired from working 12 hours, my roommates took me out to a pub. I had pisco for the first time. it´s a chilean specialty. Not that great either. Kinda a mix between tequila and rum. but it´s neither. so you´re given a tall glass of the stuff, with an ice cube and lemon slice and a coke on the side. you basically mix your own drink. i like this custom because i like my drinks strong. then some men came over and bought us two bottles of wine. both were not very good. They had turned bad in the bottle. Casa LaPostolle cab and a malbec. we came home around 3 and i woke up with a little headache. So i had fun. i get really excited to leave the house now. Even just to go to the supermarket (El Super).
I have to tell you about Juan. He´s a really nice guy that works here with his two sons. I think one is my age and the other is about 16. But he always helps me out if I need it. And he trys to talk to me slowly. His 16yr old son, Juan Jr. and I are in a water fight. On monday, I will get my revenge. Mario, Carlos, Leo, Roderigo... actually most of the guys I work with are really nice. They speak slowly and are encouraging when I try and speak Spanish. I just wish I knew it already. When I get home from work, I´m usually too tired to open my grammer book. They call me gringa down here. Even though I´m only half gringa. Anyone from usa is gringo. They all want to know if all the women in the usa are as tall as me. I say I´m about medium. In the pictures there is one of my roommates cooking. the counters and stove actually come up to mid-thigh for me. So you get some perspective.
There is so much more I want to write. I´m finally able to sneak into Nancy´s office and use her internet for free. But it´s mostly on weekends. We recieved the worst grapes this week. Cabernet from Santa Cruz, but they were mostly rot and unevenly ripened. I don´t think the sulfer will have much effect on this batch. my harvest farmer tan is comming along nicely. here, being pale skinned is pretty. my pale skin comes from the fack that it was winter in the usa before i left. ive noticed that the fairer skinned people hold the higher ranking jobs and women are always given desk jobs or other less intensive things. This is something I will never get used to.

Whooo HOooooo! Internet! I feel spoiled! Two days in a row. So anyways, I thought it was interesting that they only use medium toast barrels here. and most of them have untoasted heads. Hmmmmm. I´ve been working in the cellar a lot. Does this give the wine softer tannins?? I dunno. This is interesting to me though. I´m snooping. teehee. im so tired right now. I´ve been turning barrels and cleaning bungs to prepare for harvest. turning them at a slight degreee will keep the wine for at least 2 months, so im told. so we wont have to worry about them throughout harvest. the guys were really impressed that i could turn a full barrel. ha ha! im almost as strong as them. im actually a little taller than most of them. and the women here are tiny! like 5´5´´ or less. i am ginormous. it will be hard if i need to buy clothes, since we are going into fall.
Ohhh Omar is really cool. he´s my new buddy down here. he knows who mars volta are, and he actually plays guitar left handed too. this is crazy cause some of my friends in the US have no idea who this band is. we have a lot in common. last saturday we sat by a creek by the hotel and just wasted the afternoon talking about everything with a bottle of wine. that was the most fun i have had while here. Santa Cruz is a small town like San Luis Obispo. You run into people you know, but it is large enough to not see them everyday, omar says. he wants me to help him out in his band because i was a dj. ummm i dunno about that. the winery here keeps me pretty occupied. ive even wanted to call him since saturday, but no time, too lazy, too tired. lame stuff like that.
So today is St. Patricks day! yay irish peoples. ummm no one here is irish. so i am going to bed early. i guess my spirits are going up. im still having trouble with the language, but it´s only been 1 week. so maybe i shouldnt be so hard on myself. i understand most of what people say to me, but the chileans speak very fast and have a lot of slang. such as, pololo is boyfriend. which i have told all the men that i have. i got the whole we are latin lovers schpeal from one of the workers today. um yeah right. im gonna be staying away from latin men. this guy said that it is common to have a polola, but another girl on the side. hmmmm. yeah, still not enticing me. thanks. i could go off on this topic, but lets save it for another time.
i wish my friends were here. i know i say that all the time, but i want them to go through this with me. i want to share chile with them. i want them to have these memories too. i guess im not used to being on my own. and trying to communicate in a whole other language at the same time. at least i recognize the homesickness. i want it to be over so i can start having fun and take advantage of everything. i can feel it starting to disapate. i don´t really cry anymore. which is good.
ohhh we have a nanny now too. its fucking awesome! she cleans, does laundry and cooks dinner. i am so spoiled! im still not eating fish skins. and i dont recomend you try canned asparagus.
I hope you are doing well, and things are working out. you are always in my thoughts. im getting stronger.
love always,
me

So I have an address I think:
Casilla 208
Santa Cruz
Sexta Region
Chile
maybe you should just send me a postcard or something so that i know it will get to me. the blue jeans and gum you can send later. just in case.
im liking work more. the guys seem to be warming up to me. i think they appreciate the fact that im trying to learn their language too. i dont know how long i can talk, so i´ll make this quick i guess.
still homesick, work is hard, i have a lot of mosquito bites because there is no screen on my window. i miss my friends a lot, dont have to work closely to my prick trainer guy. in think in these situations, what would foxy brown do? kick some mother-fuckin ass! so i guess that´s what´s going to happen.
so yea, things are a little better.
love,
me

so for the next few months i have to get used to this crazy chilean keyboard. i still haven{t figured out some stuff as you will see from my spelling mistakes. for now, i{m in santa cruz, but i{m living in apalta where the winery is. my house is bright blue and has a cute gated yard. i share it with two girls who also work at the winery full time. selena, 30yrs old and nancy 28 yrs old. you have to take a long dirt road out to the winery from santa cruz. so i got here, into town. but i don{t really know how to get back. hmmm. this will be an adventure.
im excited that i finally got to get online. we have a tv at our house, but it only works when it{s not raining. last night i saw the heidi fleiss movie. tv is different here. lots of boobies everywhere. i got a new cell phone number too. so if you want to call me 011 56 9 295 7668 there ya go. its more expensive to call the US than for the US to call me. so call me. ok.
its been really hard at the winery. it{s like they dont want me around at all. because im a woman and everything. im catching on to the language quickly. im starting to think in spanish. my roomates are really patient. ohh yesss, i eat fish now. its disgusting, but im learning to like it i guess. they already think im crazy because i dont drink milk. i dont want to move on to chicken or beef though. i couldnt even eat the skin on my salmon last night. ewwwww. ok, so im slowing moving into the culture. i guess i just have to face the fact that chile was just not ready for me. can you imagine if carina were here? we would tear this place apart like we did new york.
so im sitting in this internet store, waiting for omar to pick me up after his band practice. its really nice that he speaks english. he said that it took his friend only 1 month to speak spanish fluently. i hope i can do it in 3 weeks. life is slow here. no one rushs. it took me one hour to get into santa cruz today when its only 20 minutes away. you have to wait for the bus on the side of the road and wait for other people. at the winery, they hand make everything. different tools are sodered and specialized for whatever. we need these kind of people in CA.
For now, I am very homesick. i miss my friends and family a lot. i thought that moving to another country would help me with my problems in the US, but it hasn{t. it{s moved with me. so now i have to deal with those, being lonely, and the language thing. i wish things were different. but i can{t let go of what happened, and i can{t help my feelings. do you see my dilema? you can{t love someone who doesnt love you back, so how do i?

I had such a fun day. Priscilla surprised me and came up from SLO! We went all over the city and took pictures of murals and graffiti. I took her to Haight because she had never been. Went into Amoeba and Nedelle was playing. I can picture Carlos drooling. I realized I should never be let in that store unelss I’m prepared to spend at least 50 bucks. So I had to leave fast. I got to see parts of the city I never have. It was really beautiful. I’m really tired of walking. I tried to convince her to move up here and live with Carina and Felicia. I think it would be really good for her. I think that the three of them living together is trouble. But in a good way. Like ice cream + Natalie.
So tomorrow I pick up my brother from the Oakland airport and we have another SF day. There is a Chilean Cultural festival going on in Golden Gate park tomorrow, so we’ll probably be hanging out there eating empanadas or something. I’m really excited to see him. I feel really flattered that he wanted to come all this way, just to spend one day with me. I’m special. teehee
The more I think about it, the more the days seem to close in on me. I know I had been planing this for a long time, but I’m more scared now. Because I don’t know what it will be like. I don’t want to fail. I want to impress these people. Let them know they made a good decision by hiring a girl from the US to work for them. They took a big chance. I hope they like me. I think if things work out I want to travel after harvest. I’m scheduled to come back July 5th, but if I have enough money, I’d like to see the country. Especially Valparaiso. It’s supposed to be just like San Francisco, with lots of hills and cable cars. It’s a university town, so they have a good night life. I think it was the port town that they went to in Motorcycle Dairies. Pablo Neruda’s house is there, and it’s supposed to have the best view of the city. I definitely want to see that.
I’m going to miss you. But this isn’t forever right? Will you try and contact me? Call me or email me? Even if I can’t answer just yet... not yet. You can always write. I’m always remembering you. I don’t know if you do the same.
love,
me

Dear Natalie
Sorry for not answering earlier, but as I told you over the phone, I spent
some 6 days at the hospital with a bad case of pneumonia.
I shall have somebody pick you up at the airport at 09.43 on Wednesday march
9th. He/she will be carrying a sign saying MONTES or NATALIE. If for some
reason you miss each other, please call me on my mobile phone (as you
already did). From the airport you will be brought to our Santiago offices,
where I shall introduce you to our Santiago team. From here you shall be
driven to our Apalta winery, where you shall report to Mr. Andrés Caballero.
Andrés Caballero told me he had managed to find lodging for you right at the
winery site, joining two other girls that work with us on a permanent basis.
It is not a five star accommodation, but I hope you will find it acceptable.
Kind regards
Alfredo Vidaurre
So I’ll be getting my new cell phone number and address when I get down there. Yay free rent!
3 more days left on this continent.

Today was gorgeous. I’ve been hanging out in Berkley these past couple days. On monday I went to Oakland to see Paul Rusesabagina talk. He was the guy they based the Hotel Rwanda movie on. It was really interesting to hear him speak. I felt a little depressed afterward. There is genocide going on all over the world. I really am lucky and privileged where I’m at.
Last night I took my parents to my favorite pizza place. It’s in Petaluma. It takes a half hour for them to cook your pizza but it’s well worth it. It’s actually in this old brothel building made of bricks with what looks like the original carpet and everything. To get to the bathrooms you have to exit the restaurant and head down this hallway that has like 10 skinny doors where the ladies would "entertain" their men. Kinda spooky, but fun. I’m trying to get in as much good food as I can before I leave. 5 more days!
Today we ran around Berkley, went to the Sake factory and got a little tipsy, went to the Scharfenberger chocolate factory and drank some of their hot chocolate "crack." It was delicious. namumnunmmmmm. Sugar.
Tonight Kathryn is making me dinner. I hope it turns out ok. I’ve never seen her cook. In high school we’d always have to stop at McDonald’s before we went out. She’s a skinny petite woman too. Plus she’s making everything vegetarian. I’m a little worried.
Manana is Carlos’ birthday! yay! Last time we went out we found a really good bar in the mission with a kick ass jukebox. I’ve found some good bars that hopefully me and Carina will hit tomorrow and do some drunk dialing. I have yet to find her a good Irish bar. Maybe we will find it.

I don’t know why, but I don’t sleep anymore.
Maybe it’s because of what happened.
Maybe it’s because I’m worried what will happen.
I don’t know. Maybe I’m depressed.
I feel like I need to get out of this situation. Fast.
I wish I didn’t have to go through this.
It’s all supposed to work out in the end right? A surprise ending?
Couldn’t we just skip some of the middle stuff?
I want to feel better again.

So right now I’m running off of 3 hours of sleep. My eyes are kinda puffy. But I’m off to see this winemaker guy and stay with my grandma for the weekend. Last night was really fun! The bands were awesome. But I don’t ever want to see a hairy French Canadian in short-shorts bend over EVER again. Other than that, I liked seeing old friends. Hanging out in the city till 4 was good too. So I’m tired, but it was worth hanging out with old friends for a just few hours more before I go. I love the city at night. I love how there is a whole other group of people who are up. OK, mostly bums, but other people too. Like me. Reminds me of going down to LA last summer to visit my boys. I would hang out with Alex during the day, and Rodo and Byron at night. Trips to the taco stand at 3 in the morning after Alex got off work. By the time we would get back, the paper would arrive, and we could start the day’s crossword. I’m going to miss having nothing to do but hang out. Ahhh... time to start my life as an adult. I hope I’ll find some people in Chile I can connect with. I think it will be very lonely at first. I hope you call...

I got to see Comets on Fire last night, they were pretty good. I liked the cute boy in front of me better ;). Tonight it’s Les George Leningrad and Flying Luttenbachers. I’ve got so much to do today. Gotta bake my cookies for tomorrow, call my travel agent guy, call Adam, email the new job, and get to SF by 5. This week has been really fun so far. Seeing shows in the city with my guys, ordering my new international cell phone, buying little things I’ll need before I leave. I’m starting to get a little excited. I hope I get to live at the winery for free.... so much to think about....
So it seems that my brother has broken up with his girlfriend for the final time. I don’t blame him. If you’re in love with someone, why would you cheat on them? It’s just not possible. Unfortunately, it seems like a lot of people think differently... hmmmmm. I know it’s gonna be hard for him. He really liked this one. But it’s better than being paranoid and jealous all the time. She doesn’t deserve him. Some day he’ll see that. She wasn’t very funny anyway. So I feel bad for him. Within the same week he has to find a new place to live, because they were living together, and his car got totaled. Now he has to go to a chiropractor. I don’t think I could handle all that. He’s incredibly strong.
Anyway, I’m thinking chocolate, with white chocolate chips and macadamia nuts. I gotta get to the store, and feed my typhoid.

So I got my plane tickets in the mail today! Yay! My cold is getting better, but I went to the doctor today to get all my shots. I got a tetanus shot in my left arm and hepatitis A in my right. My right arm hurts the most. :( They also gave me typhoid pills. i have to eat exactly one hour after the typhoid pill. So earlier today, my typhoid was craving a sandwich. Right now it’s craving chocolate. I’m going to drag this on as long a I can get away with it. Its weird to think I have a live virus inside me. EEEK. Within 2 weeks I should be immune to Typhoid. umm if I ever needed to be. Yeah. I get to see Mission of Burma and Erase Errata at Bimbo’s tonight! It’s gonna be really fun. Maybe I should start giving out applications for my harem.... I do look super hot right now...
Right now I’m just preoccupied with what I need to get done before I leave. All the people I have to see before I go. I’m actually glad I won’t get to see everyone. It was hard enough when I left from college. I cry really easily now. I think I’ll blame that on boys and hormones. But I know they know I’ll miss them. March 8th is comming up soon. I’m gonna go down to see the winemaker who set me up with this contact who got me the job in Chile. Gonna bake him cookies or something to say thanks. Is that lame or childish? I don’t know what kind of person he is, or how he’ll take this gesture. I think it’s kinda dorky and unconventional. Just my style. I’m 23 and I bake cookies. That’s what I’ll say at my first Dorks Anonymous meeting.
Welcome Natalie.
Thanks. It’s good to be here.
Love,
Me

Today my mom woke me up at 8. Told me to call the doctor about getting some antibiotics for my trip, cause you never know if you get sick. She has actually asked me to do this 4 times since yesterday. SO, I was a little annoyed that she woke me up to tell me this. Because apparently she thinks I’m deaf. She then came back to my room 5 minutes later to ask me to get a tetanus shot, because you need one. Except I don’t need one cause I was required to take one in order to go to college and you only need one every 20 years or so. She came back a few minutes later, and told me that her 1960 travel book says that you need a small pox shot to enter Chile. And gave me a paper of the list of shots that I have taken. This list was last updated in 1983. I think I will explode.
So its taken Cal Poly almost 2 months to file my paper work so that I can finally get my diploma, and officially be edumacated. The secretary in the Crop Science office must hate me by now. I bug her pretty much twice a week. Last week she said all the paper work would be filed by Monday and to check in with her on Wednesday. Today is Thursday, and the papers will be sent out today, but only get to the evaluations office by Monday because the Cal Poly mail system is slower than the regular mail.
I feeel like breaking something. TWO FUCKING MONTHS
Ok, so some good news is that I might end up living at the winery for free with two other women who work there full time. I hope this works out. It would be nice to not be around so much testosterone all the time. And plus, I’ll actually be making a little money. Yay!

So, I finally bought my plane tickets today. I’m leaving March 8th and am supposedly coming back July 4th. I guess there’s no backing out now. I feel really lucky that I’m able to do this, and that what I learned in college is actually gonna apply here. I’m sad I’m leaving all my friends. I think this trip will go by quickly. I’ll be staying in the town of Santa Cruz
http://www.santacruzchile.cl/ or you can view it in english by googling it. The town looks really cute. I talked to a contact down there today who’s gonna get me a room to rent. He seems nice, his name is Omar. All I can think of now is Mars Volta shaken’ their money makers and Omar’s afro. I’ve really got to work on my Spanish now. I hope I get to travel around a little while I’m down there.
I’m working on an international cell phone. So all you bitches can call me when I’m lonely. Cause all I’ll have to keep me company is my ipod. This is kinda crazy. I’m going to a whole other country on my own and I’m gonna work and live there. ON MY OWN. I think this is starting to sink in. I really don’t think I’ll have too difficult of a time adjusting. I’m usually really good at that, if someone gives me a head start. I adjusted to college pretty well. It might have been because the summer before I was living and working with my parents. I was pretty ready to get the hell out of there. I’m starting to feel those same itches. It’s easy for me to just roll with things. I think that’s one of the reasons why I used to really love surfing. Because you’re not the one in control. You have to flow with whatever comes your way. And it’s so much fun! I know it’s dorky, but my sign is leo, and you know how cats always land on their feet? That’s always how its always been with me. Things always end up ok. Even though I like to put my life in danger like skydive and shit.
I’ve been thinking about the future a little. I hope I get a kick ass job that I like and pays me enough to do what I want. I want to take up the piano again. Cause I quit right when I was getting good. I want to be completely independent. Meet someone who likes me. Buy a convertible. I miss having a cat too. These are all kinda random things, but my mind likes to go in different directions sometimes. Deal.

Everyone remembers Kato from the O.J. trial, however, Nicole’s friend, Faye D. Resnick, is certainly a lot more interesting...and now she is forgotten.....
however, she left us with a legacy....two books....this is how I "discovered" her. I found her audio book at the 99 cent store.....
She is a wing nut & I love her for it.....she describes her house, her lesbian encounter with Nicole Brown Simpson, Frogman, Sportf*cking, driftwood and much more in her book...I have become obessed with her....I bought an autographed picture of her on e-bay..it was sad to see her picture not bid on...I just had to get it..and for the low price of $2.99, I just couldn’t resist...It came today...and i love it...her wrinkles are the best part....I even made a faye resnick community..join it, if you can handle it...

So because of Thomas i’ll update in four sentences:
1. I got a better job as an asst. web manager for American Apparel, www.americanapparel.net; it’s going to rock.
2. Been hanging out with just Scott, Voula and LA Alex because Rodolfo seems has decided not to communicate with us.
3. Since I have been searching for a better job, my Mag has been waning, but I registered the domain name of www.pikmagazine.com, so I feel accomplished.
4. Not been drinking as much and I need to hang out with old friends; I hope it’ll be soon.

I am going to try to write more on this thing. I know that I havent been up to date with alot of stuff. I guess there are a few things that I should go over.
1st. PIK magazine. So, I found out that there is this other area specific magazine in Queensland Australia that is suppose to come out. I guess I’m not that creative. I wonder about that. If I am to believe Jung and think there is an archetype than that means that I am just a cheater and I am just siphoning ideas from the human collective and selling them as my own.
I have been reading this Jung book also that gives me two options: Either be an unrealistic self-contained individual or a fragmented piece of reality. So, I have to give up on some of my illusions for myself and become a realist and succeed where I can. I guess in the back of my head I knew I was going to have to give up on some of the things that I wanted to do with my life this time around. I am not going to be a U.N. diplomat for their global environmental programs. Okay, I think I can live with that. I just have to realize that I am not going to live in the hills of the ozark and just live off of the land and become a cantankerous 49er. Okay. But I am going to shoot for this godddaamn publication if nothing else.
2nd. Life in LA. It’s going okay. There have been a few new people coming into LA which is going to be good, I need fresh blood in LA. That should be good times. Other than that I have just been trying to keep the drinking under check and try to live healthy? I dont know how much I am succeeding in that but the intentions are good. I am really enjoying my place. It was a little rocky a few weeks ago with my contemplation of maybe moving but I realized that I am in a good place and in a good situation so I’m staying. I’ll think about moving when my year is up maybe by them someone i know will have a cool house to move into. Who the hell knows.
3rd. Work. Well work is work. I really cant say much. I do want to have some change of scenery, but im not sure yet. There needs to be alot of things that have to line up for me to really move from my current gig.
4th. Friends. There doing okay for the most part. Many people many changes. Recently, I have been conscience of the company I keep and I keep in contact with. A person who i recently talked who i hadnt for a while asked me who I still kept in touch with, I replied and as I wrote I realized that it seemed to me that it was a long list of people that I still like to talk to. Is it that I really have low standards in friends that there is nothing that anyone can do for me not to drift away from? Maybe I’m just a needy bastard who has nothing better than keep in contact with people? I am not sure. My ’friend’ replied with, "wow, you still keep in contact with alot of people, that’s great." But why doesn’t anyone else? Maybe I have been doing this friend thing the wrong way, maybe I’m cheapening my stock with being ’friends’ with so many people. Maybe my stock is flooding the market and in turn making my stock depreciate? Damn what the hell I’m I doing? I might go into friendship bankruptcy sooner or later. Just handing out this ’friendship’ like it was water. I think I might have to change this.
OR it could be the other way around. It could be that I am investing MY ’friendship’ capital too broadly, maybe I am diversify my portfolio too much. I might have to cut some of my smaller side investments and stick to the stocks that I know will be strong in the next coming years. mmmmm.... many things to think about.
5th feelings in my pants and new people. I realized that I need something to change soon because I am not meeting anyone new here in this situation. In job, I work with three other people and at home no tenants really talk to each other. I am getting an increase in people of zero in the last 7months or so. It sucks.
6th.Money. Need more money.
7th. Overal life. It’s going okay. I could say it could be going better, but it could be going a whole lot worse so for the time being, it’s okay. Nothing too dramatic or chaotic. Other than this magazine I am not looking forward to anything else.

My birthday is coming up next week and my parents decided to give a bed. It is the best and most needed gift that I have ever received. To tell you that I haven’t slept in a bed in close to three years now, it was like winning a million bucks. I know it’s a practical, but it was also the most thoughtful gift that I have received in the past years. I don’t think they know how much I appreciate it. Sometimes I take the family for granted because I have them so close to me, but sometimes they surprise me and this is one of those times. I only hope that I can reciprocate sometime soon.

So, I have moved to KoreaTown, K town, whatever you want to call it. I moved the first week of Sept, it’s good. I dont have much property to fill it with. I have a cot and I have a couch now. I also have boxes and still have them. I have books, no bowls, but for whatever reason I have an abnormal amount of drinking paraphernalia. The other day I connected my tv to the cable antenna in the living room. I get my rent adjusted because I do odd jobs around the building. I water, peck-up junk mail: crap like that. The only thing that really sucks is the parking. The building has no parking for me, so I either have to go rent a place like in NYC for about 60 bucks or search and search.
So around the first two weeks of Nov. I get vacation time. For my birthday I decided to go to NYC, partly to visit Courtney there, but also to just get out of Cali for a quick time. It will be my first time to the east coast. All im expecting is coldness, pizza and the statue of liberty. I leave on the 11th and come back 14 or so. Jason is coming with me, it should be good. I seem to get along with him well enough.
I have finished a couple of stories for the mag and I hope to finish some more before the year is through. I have had this idea now for about a year. It’s coming along as slow as I thought it was going to take me, so I’m not agitated or bothered by that. I know that it will take me some time, between work, work, and more work I should be able to write some stuff around.
Tomorrow is the award show that I have been working on for the past five months. I am just looking forward to the after party. I’ll tell you how that goes next time.

Episode: I say ’take me out’
Went to go see gogogo airheart yesterday. Ended up seeing Gerling which was okay. They are sort of electro clash rock punk. I surprised myself yesterday by thinking there is such a thing as too much electro-clash. I liked it the first time when it was called new wave. Went home and got a call from both of my friends who are named Alex and ended up going to the bars. Well, I ended up eating a taco on the street in front of the Burgendy bar. It was a good taco. I then went to a store that sold ball-gags. It was a little odd, it was 1am. One of the Alex’s really wanted to get one. I then walked over to the Frolic Room which has too much light for a bar. Smoked three cigarettes had a bud, left. Got home watched tv and passed out.
Clif bars: good meal when you aint got time to eat
I learned that even though you’re not home all day, it doesn’t mean that you are going to have a better time than if you stayed at home.

Today I went across the street to buy lunch. I bought a 6$ burger and fry combo. First of all 6 is about double the amount i usually spend for lunch, 2.79 is the norm. The burger was made of lean meat which to me had a bit less taste. So i guess if meat had no Fat taste I would be a vegetarian. The fries were baked, which were aight except for the fact that they had a faint smell of gas. Picked it up and walked on the cross walk back to the office.
While crossing the street a BMW was coming down the street and I knew he wasn’t going to stop for me even though I had started walking and technically they should stop. At this second, I contemplated in the back of my mind on speeding up just a little to get hit by the car.
Would I go that far to make a point? Would I speed up and get hit by this car to make the driver realize what a jackass he was being. Would I break bones to feel vindicated?
"See motherfncker what happens when you don’t stop and you think you are more important than other people. Jackass. I was just trying to get back to my office and get some lunch. I thought he was going to stop your honor. Isn’t that what you are suppose to do when a pedestrian crosses on a clearly marked crosswalk?" Mother fncker!
Well needless to say I didn’t speed up and the jackass got where he needed to be without any delays.
Went to trader Joe’s next to work and was looking for granola trail mix without nuts. On the account that I am allergic. I use to have really good nut-less granola but ate it all and they ran out from the trail mix store i use to go to. At the Joe’s there was only nut bearing bags and I don’t need any nuts in my mouth. (i know someone was going to make the joke in their minds so i need to quash it) The only mix they had was mango granola that looked way too experimental for me.

I was waiting in line at trader joe’s across from where I work at. It took me about 3 min to choose the spicy california rolls. Their cheap and are filling enough for a lunch. I could have gotten a salad but then i would have felt lame. While waiting in line the blond hard body, girl in running gear started to do stretches. She was pretty goddam hot. She had the i just ran and I sweaty thing going on. She had picked up some water a few vegetables and some crackers.
For a split second this scenario of her life flashed in my head. She probably lived in one of the nice houses in Toluca lake with her live-in boyfriend and dog. She drinks alot of water and keeps track of what she has eaten every day. She doesnt have a food journal, but it’s not because she doesn’t want one, more like it would give the impression that she is weight obsessed, but she is. She like "nature," and tells people she likes to hike. She graduated college in something like business or english and wants to teach. She doesn’t like to drink?
That’s when she made a gesture as if she forgot something. She then told the lady behind her to go if she wasn’t back by the time she was up. We were at one front end of the store and she was walking to the other end.
But why, the only thing at the end of the store is booze. Could it be that she is a wino? Does she only work out because she wants to combat all the pounding that her liver takes? Does she just like drinking wine with her friends at gatherings? What the hell she might like the hard stuff. She might like a nice glass of scotch after a good run. She might like to do shooters.
All of sudden this simple gesture had made her seem even hotter. Wow, this chick is a big boozer, and all this time i was thinking she was just a runner. And as i saw her walk over to the other end I thought maybe you can’t tell anything about a person without really meeting them. And then she picked up a roll of toilet paper and the fantasy was quashed. I paid 2.69 and walked out not even looking back.
Good times?

Okay so with this and the production on saltshaker, that has made lil’Jon one of my favorite producers. I need to interview this guy. I think that the best line in this song is:
"I need a girl that I can freak wit,
and wanna try shit, and ain’t scared of a big dick.
And love to get her pussy licked,
by another bitch, cus I ain’t drunk enough to do that."
It works on many levels.
It’s just a fncking great song.

(How you like it daddy?)
(How you like it daddy?)
Would you do it from the front?
(How you like it daddy?)
Can you take it from the back?
(How you like it daddy?)
Fyna break it down like that!
(How you like it daddy?)
[Verse One:]
24, 34, 46, good and thick, and once you get it she’ll work wit it.
Pretty face and some cute lips, earing in her tongue and she know what to do wit it.
Make a name for herself, and she do her shit well, and know how to keep her business to herself.
Come over anytime a nigga call chick, 1 o’clock, 2 o’clock, (ding dong) and she right there.
And she know why she came here, and she know where her clothes suppose to be (off and over there).
Sniff a little coke, take a little x, smoke a little weed, drink a little bit.
I need a girl that I can freak wit,
and wanna try shit, and ain’t scared of a big dick.
And love to get her pussy licked,
by another bitch, cus I ain’t drunk enough to do that.
[Chorus:]
FREAKALEEK!
(How you like it daddy?) Shameka
Keisha
(How you like it daddy?) Tara
FREAKALEEK!
Shonda
(How you like it daddy?) Sabrina
Crysta
(How you like it daddy?)Daronda
FREAKALEEK!
Theresa
(How you like it daddy?) Felicia
Tenisha
(How you like it daddy?) Sha’von
FREAKALEEK!
Monica
(How you like it daddy?) Monique
Christina
(How you like it daddy?) Yolanda
[Verse Two:]
I need to know a whole lot then to teachin’ a broad, with my ding dong make her tongue tickin the bong.
Go on ahead so I dont have to do that far, I’m spoiled (and I don’t like to work that hard).
I like to lay back, relax, and enjoy my time, and let your eyes roll back and my toes curl.
(I love when you do that girl) Until it comes time for me to have to give her hers.
Tell me what you want, do you want it missionary with your feet cramed into the head board?
Do you want it from the back with your face in the pillow so you can
yell it loud as you want to?
Do you want it on the floor? Do you want it on the chair?
Do you want it over here? Do you want it over there?
Do you want it in ya pussy? Do you want it in ya ass?
I’ll give you anything you can handle!
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
[Caller:]
Yeah, I appreciate it lil’ home boy.
[Petey Pablo:]
Not a problem. You know I do it because I love you.
Now I got to give a shoutout to Seagrim Gin cus I drink it, and they
paying me for it.

I guess that’s the main question in my mind. I have started writing some things and I have some people in the works. I know that it’s going to end up me writing a bunch of stories with a ton of pen names. I feel like this task is escaping my grasp. It’s like trying to get a whole of jello. You can see, it’s solid, but when you have it in your grasp it seems to slowly ooze out between your fingers. You have a hold of it, but it slipping away slowly.
Other than that everything is kosher.
Went to a bar last night called the Good Hurt. The only thing worth mentioning are the two bar-tending chicks in nurse outfits. It felt like I was at someone’s house after school with no parents. Just a bunch of college students hanging out and drinking in a dark clubhouse.
Someone came into town from out of town lets see if that bastard chinese man calls....
CCR’s Lodi playing in the background
===============
Just about a year ago, I set out on the road,
Seeking my fame and fortune, Looking for a pot of gold.
Things got bad, and things got worse, I guess you will know the tune.Oh ! Lord, Stuck in Lodi again.
Rode in on the Greyhound, I’ll be walking out if I go.
I was just passing through, Must be seven months or more.
Ran out of time and money, Looks like they took my friends.
Oh ! Lord, I’m stuck in Lodi again.
The man from the magazine said I was on my way.
Somewhere I lost connections, ran out of songs to play.
I came into town, a one night stand, Looks like my plans fell through. Oh ! Lord, Stuck in Lodi again.
==============
This song it brings me alot of memories, mostly of porn.
In the small stint when I use to work for a porn store, a movie came out that used it as a soundtrack for their three-way. They were in some small dink town and some out of towner comes by and causes a sexual commotion with the women-folk.
I guess that’s enough for now, I dont want to make myself sound more of a deviate.
But really Who will stop the rain?

3. Live Shows. What really pisses me off is bands that don’t play their hits at the shows. Where they proceed on playing everything from their "new" album. Goddam, that is irritating. If I am going to spend X amount of my dollars, you goddam better play the hits. I don’t want to hear free bird. I want to listen to "Loser" or "Jackass" not "Bogus Soul." Give the hits gooddamn it. Also if you are in a festival don’t be a jackass and play three songs in an hour and a half, fnckers! I dont care if you love crescendos, you know who I’m talking about. I want to hear a few albums if you are gonna play for 1hr 30 min. Fnck your artistic side. And you know what else, I ain’t taking a medley, David Spade won’t take them and neither will I.

Cut through the chit-chat....
Things that are annoying me
1. Gyms. I have started going to some form of gym here in LA. I am pretty much living off of comp days and taking my dads card. The worst thing about gyms is that everyone who goes to one has been going for awhile so they are all in good shape, damn them. I think there should be beginner gyms. Gyms where everyone starts at. Gyms where everyone is in bad shape. I think it would lower the anxiety that some people have going to the gym in the state that they are in. It should be like in school and have graduation, when you have shown improvements you move on to the next bracket of physical fitness. It would just make people less self-conscience, it would make me less self-conscience knowing that everyone at that gym are fat bastards at the beginning of their physical fitness pursuit. Damn it!
2. "Friend". I have realized in the last couple of weeks that some people make it hard to be friends. Let me explain. Sometimes no matter what great intentions that you have some people are going to be jackasses. I ain’t talking about jackasses like a slap in the face from a friend is a jackass move more like "I have called your bitch-ass 20 time inviting you to stuff and you are never up for it, not even lunch." What’s a mother-fncker ’ppose to do? I guess stop calling you, fncker... But if you are reading this it probably doesn’t pertain to you.

So Tonight on Conan O’Brien Dolly Parton was a guest. Goddam she’s got a chest. And She seems like a really nice person.
Carson Daly is a crappy interviewer. He is one of the worst interviewers that I have ever witnessed. It is redundant to say he is a douche bag or a tool because I think that they are synonymous with him. Carson Daly is one of those persons that knows people, I will give him that. The producers thought and thought right that he would be able to bring big names to his show. But He SUCKS! He asks awkward questions. He seldom makes jokes and he sucks when he makes them. I think to be and good interviewer you have to be either humorous or have credibility, i.e. Jay Leno and Barbara Walters. But then again I’m not on TV so how important is my opinion?
Germaphobes: Shannon Doherty, Donald Trump, Howie Mandel, The Summers guy from Double Dare.
Magazine status: Okay.
Should I be Incorporated or not?

Sometimes I feel the heat of the flames, the cruel tang of battery acid and rubber tires stinging the inside of my nostrils. Sometimes I feel the hair of two dogs under my arms, trying desperately to leap out of my control to establish their control elsewhere because they’re scared of 65 mph bright lights in darkness, a dusk in Anaheim on fire. Sometimes I feel utterly alone in entropy, staring at the wreckage of my car.
And then I wake up and realize that was months ago.
Last week, I got eaten alive by a mosquito. I had two bites on my lip, one on my side, one on my neck, one on my forehead, one on my thigh. The two on my lip were the worst; my lips were numb and swelled up to a size that made me very much not want to go to school, particularly because it happened the morning of the first day of two that I was going to be high-profile: giving tours of the GrC department and the Screen Printing lab.
Going to the health center on Friday afternoon was nice, particularly with the doctor saying “You just need to learn to not be so delicious!” Ahhhh, taste me, I’m delicious! But they gave me Allegra, which has helped.
Giving tours of the screen printing lab all day during Open House was fun, but tiring. I swear, I must have given the same spiel maybe 30-40 times. My throat was definitely hoarse by the end of it.
The best part about it, though, was when I was showing the light table we image screens on to a seven year old, and he looked at me and said “What if you were to look straight into the lightbulb when it goes off?”
I look at him, and I say in my most menacing voice: “Your eyes would liquifyyyyeeeee. It would be like a science experiment gone wrong.”
I miss telling the youth a bunch of untruth. Particularly teasing my little sister. Definitely miss that.

Well,
A new quarter begins. This one will be pretty neat, methinks. I walked into my ES X335 class with wonder: it felt like High School again, but with a filipino Mr. Lunsford. “The Filipino/a American Experience” is a seminar oriented, not lecture oriented class, and boy does it feel like sitting down back at Morse, in a very good way.
I’m only taking 13 units this quarter, so it seems like it’ll be a bit easier than of late. This seems like a good quarter to get into two different internships. I’ve already started my first quarter at UGS, the on-campus printing company run entirely by students, and I’m really excited to get an interview pretty soon with Big Images, a wide format printer on Broad St. run by the guy who used to live in my room. If I get the internship, it’ll make my day. The guy told Jim he’s looking for somebody to learn the ropes so they can eventually be an actual employee. If all goes well, I’ll be able to stay in the area after graduation next year, and that sounds swell!

And it rains again. This time, in the city of angels.
Hanging out with Abe for a couple of days has been definite good times… I really felt like I had to get the heck out of Dodge after finals week finished. I was getting… restless and bored.
I’ll be arriving back on the Central Coast tomorrow, helping Kristen move back from her victory over the UCLA educational system.
Ciao.

Sigh. It’s finally over.
Finals week was a monstrous labyrinth. Fire, ogres, pain sticks, hot MAGMA!!! And I survived. With black hair, no less.
That’s right. Kristen helped dye my hair black. It’s pretty freakin’ cool.
Mom told me about the new Moby album coming out next week, and lo! and behold! Two hours later I have it! Tis pretty decent. Very 80’s new wave.
Now, I’m in that part of the year where it’s the all-of-a-sudden death stop. Going going going in class, and then STOP. I don’t want to do anything with my days, but I feel I should be doing something. Sigh…
It’s not so bad, though. Just rainy.

Shotgun rain
Every day this week I’ve felt
the cool steel of the Winchester.
My knuckles, white,
gripped hard over metal
and envied my innocent eyes.
After all,
on this dark morning
when the clouds cover us like taxpayer dollars,
a steady eye cannot be faulted…
If I fail, it is the trigger finger that should crawl away in shame.
So I walk past cherry blossom trees
and move straight to crimson roses.
I stop where I can get a
straight bead on the sky,
fill a chamber with verse
and let fly.
After a glancing shot, the sky bleeds the ground.
I find no part of my body innocent,
and in me, no remorse.
Consider this poetic justice:
In this world of blossoming black umbrellas
rotating swiftly in clockwork fashion
above the heads of the protected,
when a girl turns to her neighbor in the crowd
and says,
“the rain just kills me inside sometimes.”
I wish I was there to say back
“It seems like you’re always just waiting for it.”
And I carry my Winchester, sans umbrella,
down the street, turning right
and find the second house on the left.
I’ll sit down in my chair, eyes closed,
and just listen to the wounded animal in the sky above.

Today, I purchased a phonograph player from Dave. I figure that everybody else is doing up their music all digital-like, and so the new trend is to go hyper-analog. And that’s just what I’ve done.
I made my first record purchase today since I purchased Paul Simon’s Graceland back in tenth grade. Both of the Ryan Adams’ Love is Hell EPs have been floating circularly around my life these past few hours. These EPs are the new Rush of Blood to the Head, and just as good, if not better. Just listen to the songs “Political Scientists” or his cover of “Wonderwall” or even “World War 24.” My attention is a needle in it’s groove.
Another LP purchase of the day is Crowded House’s self-titled album… you know Crowded House… Don’t Dream it’s Over. The song that Sixpence None the Richer recently covered. It’s a pretty decent album, reminds me a bit of INXS, with a little less flair.
I am so tired.

Sun Tzu’s The Art of War. Sigh. Why Sun Tzu’s The Art of War?
It’s printing right now. No real problems, just a head cold and I’m here at the lab later than I expected.
Many of you probably have already heard the news: Enterprise has been canceled, and the last episode shows sometime in May. It’s sad, especially with how good this season has been, but I think I can say that as long as the new Battlestar Galactica continues, my world will still be complete. It’s tough to put into words just how good that series is. It’s like taking speed. Not that I would know, but I guess it’s like how I’d imagine taking speed. But yeah, BSG starts it’s second season this next summer.
And then the Goblet of Fire comes out this November. I read on SciFi Wire (thanks to my brother’s suggestion that I keep a close eye on that site) that the Weird Sisters, who are the band that play during the Yule Ball, are going to have members of Radiohead in it. This news pleases Kristen to no end, she’s the biggest Radiohead fan I’ve ever met.
Me? I’m fine. Still alive. The stomach flu has gone away, but is being replaced by a pretty killer head cold. I think my body’s ganging up against me.
This is what happens when I write on the whiteboard that I’m “the life of the afterlife” and that “it’s time to love myself all over again.” I just thought it was funny. Seriously.
Now I’m rambling.
Somebody smack me.

If you take the “el” out of “People,” you get “Pope.” This is due to the fact that el Pope is much like “people,” except that there’s just one of him.
Thus, “El Pope.” A man of the people; so much so that his name is an anagram for people.

Stopped by Barnes & Noble today for a coffee and some free reading, when I discovered the book Liberalism is a Mental Disorder by Michael Savage.
First off, excellent title. It’s what drew me to the book. I’m sure he considered many other reasonable titles before he settled on it and he definitely went in the right direction. Other titles he rejected include Liberalism, the new commy-terrorism and Liberals: They WILL eat your baby; but it got my attention and that’s what matters.
When I initially went to see Fahrenheit 911, some conservative minded friends went with me and so, in a reflexive post-movie state, I asked them what they thought of the film. After they expressed an inclination to burn down his house and kill his children (see: terrorism), they pined for a movie of similar caliber from their point of view. I think Michael Savage is the man for such a movie. I would probably enjoy a movie like this so long as it was truly funny. While a great many friends take politics very seriously, I really believe that comedy is much more important in my day to day life. I propose instead of having “debates” (I’ll get back to Savage’s use of quotations later), we have each candidate do 30 minutes of stand-up and choose the next leader of the free world with a device that can only be called the laugh-o-meter. Their performances wouldn’t be any more scripted than they are now.
Incidentally, if this system had been in place in 2004, the election wouldn’t have even been close. The Great Reverend Al Sharpton would have annihilated the whole crowd. Bush’s frat boy humor just isn’t appealing, Kerry could bore a guy on laughing gas to tears, Howard Dean has that mad look in his eyes that makes you question whether or not he’s kidding. Only Sharpton could say, “George Bush giving tax cuts is like Jim Jones giving Kool-Aid. It tastes good but it’ll kill you,” and get away with it.
Getting back to the book, what makes Michael Savage great is his fanaticism, he put “United Nations” in quotes, apparently Mr. Savage believes the UN is a fictional body of world leaders, much like Super Friends (Come to think of it, calling Korea, Iraq, and Iran the “Legion of Doom” wouldn’t be any more ridiculous than “Axis of Evil”). Now, I’m not saying the UN is in any way efficient or effective, but to put quotes around an international diplomatic organization calls your grip on the bike handle that is reality into question. At a later point, Big Mike inventated the word islamofascist, which to me sounds like a game where you run around hitting fascists on the head with a laughably over-sized mallet; the point being that this was a situation which necessitated a hyphen, to indicate your intention is humor and not a failed attempt at english. I suppose it is possible that it comes up so often in his daily vocabulary that he has actually started to believe that this word is, in fact, in Webster’s, under i.
My favorite quote from 15 minutes of reading has to be:
“Ultimately, the legions of leftist revolutionaries are laughable. Their ideology has been a complete failure wherever it has been tried… …Which is why I invite you to sneer at their Big Lie. I invite you to remain vigilant before a bomb goes off in your mother’s house.”
Did… …did Michael Savage just threaten to level my mother’s home if I refuse to sneer?

I recently downloaded The End is Here which is a recording of Five Iron Frenzy’s final show in Colorado back in late 2003. The download came in at an average of 350 kbps, which is freakin’ unbelievable. This meant that the 100 mg file came in at about six and a half minutes. My hair stood straight back and my eyebrows were singed. It was that amazing.
But what’s truly incredible is the show itself. Just listening to it, particularly around the end, as they start to sing “Every New Day” and you know it’s the last time they ever were to sing that song… I almost started crying. Not to mention when they broke out into Amazing Grace at the end…
Wow.

So, Red alerted me to Darth Vader’s blog and I’m definitely geeking out over it. My favorite part about it is the comments left by readers. Here’s my favorite from the last post:
Mr. Vader,
We at the Internal Revenue Service have had our eyes on you for quite some time. We have watched you crush people with a lack of mercy that would stun a cold fish, we have watched you destroy entire fleets on a whim, we have watched you pay less than acceptable taxes…
We in the I.R.S. firmly believe in intimidation, destructive whims, and the execution of lesser officers round the clock.
And so we have decided that you are more than qualified to accept a position in our administration. The job would be management, with several people under you whose tracheas you could crush. It would require almost no real work and frightening other people to give you their lifes’ savings.
Like we said, you’re over qualified, our one question is, will you take the job, or do we have to send some people over there to, “convince you”?
The Internal Revenue Service: we want your money!
To which Darth Vader responds:
Dear IRS,
I understand that your offices are located in the distant Sol System, which I believe has been scheduled for demolition.
I’ll see you in Hell.
Sincerely,
D. Vader
C’mon. Isn’t that awesome?!?!

they are fun. especially when used in conjunction with either apple or pomegranate tobacco. which taste really good. one of the guys from security came down to hassle us, but once we had established that what we were smoking was, in fact, tobacco, he told us a story about how he had lived in seattle for six years. i’m not entirely sure of the significance of that, if there is any. and now it’s time to brush my teeth and go to bed, so i can get up and do homework tomorrow.

We have all seen butterflies dancing in the air.
They bounce from flower to flower in gardens and meadows.
And we have all noticed what happens when a person walks up to a butterfly. The butterfly flies away. It flees.
Why?
It does that because it’s afraid. It’s afraid of getting hurt.
But rocks are different.
When you approach a rock, what happens? What does it do?
It just sits there.
Yes, you’ve probably noticed that the vast majority of rocks refuse to flee when you walk up to them.
With these things in mind, you might someday want to spend a few hours watching rocks and butterflies. Almost certainly you’ll see the vast differences between them. For instance, butterflies seem to spend most of their time trying to escape from things. They fear people, birds, lizards, spiders, dogs, cats, frogs, and snakes.
(And some people, you may have noticed, are afraid of these same things.)
(And, oddly, these same things are often afraid of people.)
(But hardly anything is afraid of a butterfly.)
As for rocks, on the other hand: birds, lizards, spiders, dogs, cats, frogs, people and snakes all fail to cause fear in their stoney hearts. Rocks are brave.
Why is that so?
Where do rocks get their courage?
It comes from their humility.
Yes. Rocks as a group have shed themselves of all their pride. You can search high and low, and here and there, but you’ll have difficulty finding a proud rock. They refuse to view themselves as important things. It matters very little to them whether people throw them, or whether crawling things crawl on them. Whatever happens, they just continue to do their best to cope.
Try this experiment sometime: go out in the garden, find a rock and pee on it.
Does it care?
Of course it cares, but very little. Getting pee-ed on is just one more thing a rock has to deal with. A rock takes life as it comes.
Now think of butterflies. Butterflies actually believe they’re important. That’s why they’re always fearful, always feeling that it would be a great tragedy if something "bad" was to happen to them.
Try to pee on a butterfly.
See what happens?
You have to chase it all around the garden trying to get it wet.
That’s a difficult task for a man or woman. Particularly a woman.
Why does a butterfly make life so difficult?
Why does it flee?
Because it refuses to accept your insulting actions, that’s why.
It’s full of pride.
Try another experiment: sit on a rock.
What happens?
Very little.
But then...sit on a butterfly.
What happens?
The butterfly feels crushed. It’s so humiliated it refuses to move. It just lies there refusing to even look like a healthy butterfly anymore.
Of course, some people will say that this is a stupid experiment. Most people believe butterflies are delicate, easily wounded things, while rocks are hard and tough to break. These people, of course, expect that if you sit on a butterfly it will die, and expect that sitting on a rock will change it very little.
But let me ask you this, if that’s what you believe: what happens when a butterfly stays still and lets you sit on it?
It becomes a rock, that’s what.
How can that be?
I wish I could tell you.
That’s just the way it happens.
It’s a miracle.
Butterflies flee: that’s their nature, the way they are. Rocks stay still: that’s the way they are. So if the butterfly stays still while some big ass is coming down on it, then the butterfly changes into a rock.
And it rarely happens.
Most butterflies fail.
They are full of fear.
Pride, remember, is just another form of fear.
A great deal of energy is wasted being fearful, wasted by refusing to take life as it comes. But the truth is: we creatures of the earth have only a limited amount of energy, so we pay dearly if we waste it. The butterfly darts here and there, always suspicious, always watching out for danger. By doing this it wastes vital energy. On the other hand, rocks just sit there saving their energy. That is why rocks live forever, and butterflies die so young.

From a random turn of events I got to go to Sacramento tonight and see Finesse Mitchell do stand-up. He did a really good set too, and yes, he did some Starkisha, along with a dry cereal joke that was really funny, but that I don’t care to repeat online, maybe if you ask me in person. Anywoo, this is basically me bragging, and I know most of you are like "Wha? Who? Stakishawhatsitwhoosy?" so I’ll just put up the pic and leave it at that.

I went rock climbing the other day and there were these two guys climbing. One was an experienced climber and the other probably had someone help him with his shoelaces. They did that thing where they talked:
Some guy: Dood, you’re still on that run? You’ve been up there for like 20 minutes.
Some other guy: You missed it man, it was crazy. The rope broke and I almost died!
The first guy again: You’re rope broke? So you’re just hanging there defying gravity right now?
The wall guy: Um, yeah. You know, God protects his chosen people.
Me: So is it allright if I untie this end down here then?
At this point my friend Paul laughed and fell off the wall next to him so I shouted "sinner!"

This is supposed to be one of the longest palindromes ever. I guess that for english majors this is like word porn or something. I especially like the last sentence: "I vomit on rats."
I’m sure that somebody put a lot of time into this, but it seems more to me something convicts write on their walls with poop.

Damn! Tonights dinner was as good as sex. And what followed was better than dinner!
Chicken, marinated in:
Chicken Broth, ginger, basil, rosemary, garlic. BBQed.
Couscous with: Tomato, cilantro, broth, garlic, salt, and avocado.
Spinach, sauteed in garlic and salt.
Man, that was excellent food.

I recently received this email:
[quote]
Hi Ryan,
Thanks for the resume. Yes, we are currently looking for people.
We have a multitude of roles we are filling as we find the right
people. Presently we’re looking for junior and senior additions
to our technical staff as well as coverage for NOC shifts (24x7).
We’re a small company: most roles here are pretty broad regardless
of what it may say on your business card.
Things are a bit crazy this week and next — we’re about half way
through the build-out of a ~60 rack data-center addition. I’d like
to see when I can get time from some other members of the team here
before scheduling an in-person interview.
What’s your schedule like as far as scheduling an interview goes?
Here’s some questions to maybe get us started via e-mail and
determine which of us you should be talking with first. I’ve looked
through your resume so these are partially drawn from that.
[/quote]
Please review the following Email and post critiques:
Josh,
I’m available for interviews M/W/F, after 2pm, before 5pm.
As for your questions, I’ll get a quick start on them:
Hardware or software?
Both.
What do you think of Microsoft Windows?
I don’t hate it, but I spend most of my time running Linux/OS X. I try to avoid Windows mainly because of virus/worm problems and the amount of spyware and things that can automatically install without user intervention, especially when browsing with IE and ActiveX. Using Linux, or firefox in Windows greatly mitigates these problems. Also, Linux allows me more freedom to experiment and learn about the inner workings of an operating system.
Which do you prefer: Debian or GenToo? Why?
That depends on the application. On my box, I like gentoo. It builds all applications from the latest sourcecode, using highly optimized compilation flags. However, on my senior project, I am using debian because the servers do not have enough processor power to constantly compile source packages. Debian is great for staying current on packages where you do not necessarily need or want to spend the time to compile highly optimized packages.
How/why did you end up in SLO and at Cal Poly?
I applied to quite a few high end schools (MIT, Cal Tech, UCLA, UC Davis, and Cal Poly), and only got into two: UCD and Cal Poly. I came down to visit SLO in the spring of my senior year, and immediately fell in love with the area. Having just gotten into rock climbing, seeing Bishop’s Peak so close to campus really drew me in to the idea of going to Cal Poly. Additionally, I researched the ratings of the College of Engineering as compared to Davis; Cal Poly had a much better rated program.
Please tell me a bit more about your Senior Project?
My Senior Project is building a high-speed, networked storage array for mirroring popular open source projects, such as Gentoo, Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora Core. Eventually, we are pitching for local and corporate sponsorship to purchase up to 2 TB of storage in order to mirror Sourceforge.net. We are using hardware donated by Brocade, 160GB of high-speed SCSI over Fibre Channel storage at the moment. You can access it while we work on it at http://san.csc.calpoly.edu
What has been your favorite Cal Poly course thus far? Why?
Software Engineering was probably my favorite Cal Poly course. It taught me a great deal about real world software engineering and the requirements process. It was my first real experience coding under serious time and management constraints.
Who is your favorite professor? Why?
Michael Haungs, he’s my Senior Project Advisor. I like him as a professor because he is so approachable and understanding. He has a real appreciation for his students, and has a real knack for teaching and making dry subject matter interesting.
When did you first get into computers/networks/software/electronics/etc? Why?
I started getting into computers in grade school, around 5th grade. My parents had just bought a PC, and I was immediately hooked. I had always been interested in electronics, and the computer, especially with the emerging internet, seemed like a great hobby, and a ready way to spend my free time. In about 7th grade, I took two C programming course which greatly affected the way I used computers. Before those classes, I used our home computer for email, news, et-cetera, and after the course, I was able to create my own programs to use the computer in new and exciting ways. I’ve used principles that I learned in that Data Structures and Algorithms class in absolutely every programming project I’ve ever written since then; I feel I have a great advantage over all other students in my grade level because I am very familiar with the more technical usage of pointers, structures, and other classic C data structures and algorithms; I learned it all at a very young age, and its stuck with me ever since.
What do you think when you hear the word “marketing”?
Its a necessity. You could have the greatest product in the world, but if no one knows about it, its going to fail. I’ve noticed this first hand in some of my personal coding projects. While my projects are open-source, and not-for-profit, I can still see an positive impact with good marketing. Even open source projects need marketing; there are developers out there that can help with all sorts of projects, but only if they’ve heard of them.
What would be required of a potential employer for you to want to work
there for a long time?
I look for the following in long term employers:
1) Flexibility: I like to work with companies that can change with the times and practices of modern computing.
2) Employee Input: If one of Company X’s employees has a valid idea on how to fix/improve/adjust a process for the good of the company, I expect that idea to be given due process and merit, and not just filed with all the other memos. New employees bring fresh ideas and differing experiences that allow a company to tackle new problems from many different directions. Its a great asset.
3) Accountability.
4)
What do you feel is the most important thing in business?
Enjoying what you do.
How was Italy?
Great. That Europe trip was one of my most enjoyable memories to date. Venice was especially cool!

See those burgers? Those burgers are not photo-shopped to hugeness, they are actually that size. Fifteen (yes, 15) pounds each they are being served at Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub in Clearfield, Pa. I am never moving to Pennsylvania, ever ever ever. The damn thing costs $30 and comes with 10.5 pounds of ground beef, 25 slices of cheese, an entire head of lettuce, three tomatoes, two onions, and a cup and a half each of mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, mustard, and banana peppers. It is called the Belly Buster, and if you can eat it all, without help, it is free. Wow, yuck.

Well, you all had quite the variety of answers. Airplanes, electronic paper (something to do with electromagnetic pixilation, I think), ecstasy (that’s what I get for asking the weird people in my classes), books and some other stuff. I will use this new information in my mental files for all of you; it will accumulate there with other nearly useless information, like your shoe size.
As for me, I still haven’t decided on my favorite invention, it is still a straight tie between the movable type printing press and pants; although it would be easier to convince me in one direction than the other if you tried.

I’ve..:
-gone to Vancouver (not
onionsniper’s vancouver, but the cool one) last weekend with B to hang out with my sister and have a good time. Those objectives, and much more photography, were accomplished.
-Gone to the Vancouver Aquarium and immediately craved sushi
-finished a writeup of the only interesting thing I’ve accomplished this year, academically. 11 pages of screen shots, baby!
-watched a
Mac Dre music video/DVD. this guy is crazy. So is
eraserhead-spent half of today unicycling. I’m pretty good as long as I have someone’s clavicle to lean on.
-Given a chick a black eye, both a first for me and her. She totally deserved it, though.
-been rollerskating. There was a May Day party at Skateland in olympia, which I enjoyed far too much for my own good. My legs will probably fall off below the knee...
-Watched really bad stoner movies with B, while pretty sober. Not a wise choice.
-hung out in a Vancouver pot bar with Hank the Tank, a 6’8" diabetic amputee ex-fisherman strip club bouncer/photographer. He has a size 18 prosthetic left foot, and a minivan.
My lab has no gone from somewhere that I used to be psyched about going, to somewhere I stash my unicycle while I’m getting dinner.
on that note, time to fall over again. a website/gallery with more photos is in the works, now that a password reset has taken hold. Thanks,
lwood!

this is one of my favorite stories about klaus kinski ever.
Jack Lemmon once said that he was in line at Ace Hardware in Beverly Hills, and the sales clerk kept looking past him. "I may not be the biggest star in the world" he said, "but, jeez, usually when I stand in line, the clerk will notice me. I turned around, and there was Klaus Kinski with an ax."

so last night i brought my new german roommate out with my friends juan pablo, omar, alfonse, and some other winemakers to the castle. it was a sort-of send off party for alfonse since he´s going back to gringolandia today. try and think of a german girl speaking spanish. its a little awkward, the accent, but she´s been here about the same amount of time as me, and she´s a much better speaker. im jealous. i drank so much wine, we went skinny dipping in the lagoon. what a kick in the pants. came back around 6:30 in the morning and i almost slept through work. oops. i actually think i am still drunk. oh well. the strange part is, is that this used to be normal behavior. ahhh how i miss it. i have a cut on my foot and i have no idea how that happened. yes, i am still drunk. i also got mail!! yay!!! i heart byron so much. if only i were a little barefoot guatemalan woman living in a shack on the hillside. i´d be all over that ish. good to hear that people are doing well up there. i have a lot of free time now that im working in the visitor´s center. i´m basically on call every day if there´s an english tour needed. its actually pretty cool, when i meet people, they think im chilena. im developing an accent. its not as cool as thomas´s impressions of british people, but im working on it. so i have more time to think about stuff and i miss the food from california. my mom sent me a package of chocolate and tofu, but i need mexican food. or else i will die. well, not really, but i miss it a lot. i need spicy. everything here is so bland. in chile right now they are all about juanes and reggae tone. im constantly translating songs for people. which always ends up with them blushing because a lot of music is about sex and love. i love funk and soul music, especially female soul singers because they have so much passion and courage in their music. que linda.
oh yeah, that guy, he´s in the harem too.

And so, I’ve been walking around the last couple of days thinking that today was Mother’s Day.
So, I called my Grandma in Arkansas today, wished her a happy Mother’s Day, and she was a little confused.
“You’re a little early,” she said.
“Nope. It’s today. A special day. Happy Mother’s Day!!! I remembered!”
“Dear, it’s not until Sunday.”
“Oh.”
So, there you have it. Better early than never, I suppose…

"Teachers are either enthusiastic or unsuccessful. Teachers are not all unsuccessful. Therefore there are enthusiastic teachers." that statement can be expressed and proven in symbolic logic as follows, using Tx to represent Teachers, Ex to represent Enthusiastic, and Ux to represent Unsuccessful; also, pretend that the 3 in (3x) is actually a backwards "E", and that the greater than symbol is more of a horse shoe:
1. (x) [Tx > (Ex v Ux)]
2. (3x) (Tx * ~Ux) / (3x) (Tx * Ex)
3. Ta * ~Ua 2 Existential Instantiation
4. Ta > (Ea v Ua) 1 Universal Instantiation
5. Ta 3 Simplification
6. ~Ua * Ta 3 Commutation
7. ~Ua 6 Simp.
8. Ea v Ua 4, 5 Modus Ponens
9. Ua v Ea 8 Comm.
10. Ea 9, 7 Disjunctive Syllogism
11. Ta * Ea 5, 10 Conjunction
12. (3x) (Tx * Ex) 11 Existential Generalization
fun stuff, eh? and that’s one of the shorter ones... one of the homework problems is supposed to take 26 steps.
on that note, i had a very strange dream last night. have you ever had one of those dreams where you’re at a location you know, only not really? for example, you’re your house, but everything about it is different? i definitely had one of those last night. i don’t remember the whole thing, unfortunately, because it was fairly interesting. it took place at whitworth (only it wasn’t really whitworth), in Mac and BJ (only they weren’t really Mac and BJ) and the space between it (not real either). and it involved several characters from the show "boy meets world", and some other people that i knew but don’t remember now. and i didn’t even have anything weird to eat.
also, a belated happy 21st birthday to ben tkach, a quality individual, and to my mother, whose age shall remain unspecified.

Wow, crazy night.
Lemme tell you about a little experience I had with my good buddy Jaeger: I was over at my friends’ house — I won’t name names to protect the innocent — having a good time drinking. We both just had the same brutal, interminable networking midterm and were damned ready to forget it. After two shots, and a surfer on acid, we decided a little customary foos-ball was in order; I beat the pants off him, big time. Afterwards, I shared my Cuban cigars with my friends, and we hit up the neighbors for something a little more wacky.
This is where things start to get fuzzy.
We passed the controller to San Andreas, amoung other things — I’m not totally sure how long we were at it — until my body was so dry, my contact fell out of my face. After rescuing that situation with some borrowed solution, I decided it was time to make my exit, as my friends had done so before me. Having, by now, gone through a wide range of feelings and lingering random funny-thoughts — which is what I’m calling a random half-thought that you only really think of long enough to think that it’s mildy funny that you are thinking of it, and then presently forget and move on to another — I was sufficiently tired for a nap.
Cue funky trance-like state.
There I am, on the couch — only remembering to breathe in 5 breathe bursts, with a time delay of 25 seconds between each (bonus points if you can solve that pattern of pulses for a Fourier Series) — dreaming the aforementioned funny-thoughts, and hallucinating mildy.
I hear the bone-sawing sound of an automatic weapon from the video game next door, and suddenly realize: I haven’t really lived the past year and a half of my life, and am still desperately trying to wake up in the recovery room. I open my eyes and realize: my entire family is still there, encouraging my failing attempts at breathing, as I turgidly attempt to effect some proper form of gas exchange — one involving O2 and CO2. Then, in an instant, the glimpse that I have of that altered reality — that feeling of not having lived the past 18 months — is blown away as I recover my senses, and fill my lungs with oxygen.
A little background for those of you who are not so familiar with the story of my life: I had an incredibly invasive jaw surgery 18 months ago, which wired my jaw shut for 3 weeks, and left me 15 pounds lighter. Needless to say, the time between when I was put under — which, as it occured, happened right after one of my surgeons told me that the other surgeon likes to operate naked (I looked over to verify, and sure enough, he was taking his shoes off) — and the time that I got unwired, and felt more myself was less of the predicted 18 days, and more like 18 months. Hell, I still feel the pain — or lack thereof — in most of my upper jaw; I have not fullly regained the feeling in my gums. Having this sort of dream really trips me out after such an ordeal. Really, I don’t want to go through that again.

And yes I’m a better friend, than I’ve ever been a lover
And that’s not saying much, but I’m not saying much today
-elbow, "lucky with disease"
Is there any appropriate response or course of action when you see a lesson from your painful personal past being re-enacted by someone close to you?
I’m watching a breakup whose time has long since come, with a friend of mine. Her fellow is very much a Manly Man but not a Gentleman, and it shows in how he acts towards her and treats her. I know the error in his ways, because I did that once, several years and many lifetimes ago. I know I learned from my past because I was able to relate the lessons I learned, and *gasp* morals of the story to my friend.
So far today, I’ve seen him take so many of the desperate steps which I remember taking years ago, when I was in his shoes. While I like to think that I learned my lesson and I’m done with it, it’s painful to watch it enacted in what is ostensibly and literally my living room as of late. It’s not my situation to deal with, not by a long shot, but I consider myself an honest friend of the woman involved. I’m not in this to save anyone, or to right my past wrongs.
What’s there to do? I was travelling with my friend today, and we spent today talking her about our experiences, both good and bad, and about the lessons I learned from my actions. It’s like surviving a plane crash, and then years later, watching the TLC documentary about what damn year broke you. Chew on that,
disaster_porn.
Anyways, I’ve said my piece to her, and tried to make my peace with my own past. Anything else that happens isn’t a reflection on me, it’s just someone else having their Lovely Growing Experience/Adventures.

so my german roommate has caused a scandal in my little village. she brought back some guy to our house and all the field workers saw him leave in the morning. i could really give two shits about this, especially since i didnt hear anything all night. but apparently, one man sleeping in a small house of 4 women, they all want to know what bed he slept in. its also a little bit of a scandal that i went skinny dipping. im just glad i didnt tell them that it was with only men. and it wasnt some orgy thing, dont worry. i know of a particular naked hot tub excursion in SLO that a few friends took part in. in fact it happened a lot. kinda like how everyone has seen austin´s penis. no biggie. i mean, yeah its a good size, but its not that big of a deal. ok im just going to stop.
im also tired of the homophobia here. if you mention that someone is gay or lesbian, they automatically make this face like the person smells really bad. and im so tired of explaining that that person over there is really nice, and exactly like you. they just like men, or women. this homophobia thing comes up at least once a week with different people. im too liberal for this little town. i hope santiago is different. i need to travel more.
they have real gypsies here. they tell fortunes, wear hippy skirts, sell jewelry and live on the side of the road in these really colorful tents.
there are tons of little shrines on the sides of the road for dead relatives. there are a lot of drunk driving accidents. and since no one wears seatbelts, they die. you´d think they´d get the point by now. yeah.
so i know i could take this assistant winemakers job in California. but it wouldnt give me a chance to travel, since its full time and all. so i dont know if i want to take it or not. arrrghhh. i will know by the end of this week.
thanks for the mail lindsey! i just got it yesterday. im a big idiot and forgot your email address, so i would have thanked you in a more personal way. that sounds kinda kinky. oops. but you know what i mean. or do you!?!?!?
anyway, so i get paid this week, and me and the german girl who everyone doesnt like now, are going to santiago to go shopping. they say everything is cheaper there since the sweatshops are actually closer to the stores. kinda like the garment district in LA. yay! then i think we are going to Valparaiso. i dont know exactly how this will all work out, considering that the students in Valpariso were rioting a few weeks ago, and how i look like i could be a student and all. another adventure for me!
i have a ton of pictures i need to post. since im in the tourism office, and there aren´t many english tours, and we´re going into winter, so its off season, i have a lot of time on my hands. i went through the vineyard on monday and took a bunch. i´ve also changed my photos to yahoo. that way you can put pictures up of me on your screensaver, and wallpaper and stuff without the picture saying snapfish on the side. cause i know your gonna do that.
we have a new nanny now. she´s not as good as the old one. but Bernarda, the one we used to have was my buddy. we talked and gossiped all the time. but she loves the campo more. i guess better for her. i miss her. ive developed a crush on alejandro sans. ´hes this spanish singer in the new shakira video. HOTNess. i just with the video showed more of him than shakira´s ass-shaking-spasmic-belly-dancing thing she does.

But probably only to me or maybe other diehard Harry Potter fans. I’ve been reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix because I’m bored:
They may not look dangerous, but if angered they will gouge out human eyes with their fingers, which as you can see, are very sharp and not at all desirable near the eyeballs (p 259).
Hagrid, who had never heard Umbridge’s fake cough beofre, was gazing in some concern at the closest thestral [magical flying reptilian horse], evidently under the impression that it had made the sound (p 446).

Paul Winchell died this past weekend, and with him goes the original voice of Tigger from Winnie the Pooh.
Initial autopsy results show his top was made of rubber and his bottom made of springs.

Last night, I had a dream that I went to an open mic night to do a stand-up routine…
…and only thought up a single joke ahead of time. It did not go as well as I might have hoped.

While walking into work I read the headline “Tsunami Warning Fizzles.”
For those who don’t know, there was a HUGE earthquake off the cost of Eureka California ( magnitude seven point OH ) on Tuesday evening that set off a Tsunami warning along the west coast. While those of us who found out were convinced of our imminent death, the news channels wouldn’t have been more excited if Michael Jackson was caught molesting Scott Peterson’s son at Robert Blake’s house.
They were salivating at the death and destruction the Tsunami would bring; there would be countless wrecked houses to stand in front of, cute orphaned children to exploit, and of course the freak house that had been moved 400,000 miles and remained completely intact.
Which brings us to the word ?Fizzle.?
Dictionary.com defines Fizzle as ?To fail or end weakly, especially after a hopeful beginning.?
The writers for the San Francisco Chronicle had already booked flights to Tahiti for lengthy vacations. With this kind of abundant material they could have brought Ann Killion ( sportswriter for the SJ Mercury ) on and had her write the entire newspaper. With a disaster of Tsunamic proportions, the news really writes itself. All you have to do is report the number of bodies found today, and the new inspiring story of the dog who carried an entire school bus full of unconscious nuns/orphans/puppies back to their church/happy family/pile of dog biscuits.
But then it all fell apart. It was a huge earthquake, but it was the wrong kind of huge earthquake. What all started out so swimmingly ended up fizzling like Woody Allen’s career.
Bonus: Where did the title of this entry come from?

Upon meeting my new boss:
BossMan: So, what time would you like to start working in the morning?
Me: It doesn’t really matter, I can come in any time you need me to be here.
BossMan: Well, me and Bob normally get here at six in the morning.
Me: I’ll see you at eight.

First day of a real job tomorrow.
Not a job that involves the transportation of individually packaged cheese packets or explaining that despite the persistent rumor to the contrary, buying a service plan for a laptop does not immediately qualify you as mentally deficient; instead, this job will be the culmination of my schooling up to this point, the ultimate pointer as to whether or not I’ve been wasting my life in front of a text editor when I should really be up to my knees in my own feces with the Peace Core or working at starting my own public access show in Aurora, Illinois with my best friend Garth.
I don’t know where to go from here, there are many directions and I’d like to go to sleep soon, so I’ll just do some bullet points:
- I can’t sleep. Ryan compared it to the night before Christmas, but I’m thinking it’s more like Judgment Day Eve.
- You wouldn’t believe the amount of documentation they sent me, I am convinced that the “new hire” packet this place hands out is solely responsible for the destruction of the rain forests.
- Some of the perks my new employer has border on obscenity. They have a service called dock3, where essentially they hired a group of people to be enlisted as indentured servants. The full list of services can be found here, but the one that sticks out for me is that they will take my car to get it’s oil changed while I am working. I thought that’s what interns were for.
Man, that’s a hard life.

The things that were done to myself and others in the Networking final that was administered yesterday surely violates several stipulations of the Geneva convention.
I’ve discussed the actions with my state senator and he has assured me that those responsible for this injustice will be prosecuted as nothing less than terrorists.
Dr. “Smith,” pack your bags, you’re off to sunny Guantanamo Bay.
Did You Know?: This same professor just offered me no less than two jobs in the fall, one of them as a grader for a class I’m not entirely sure I’ll pass.

I only have one mind. It can only maintain momentum in one direction as it is one single thing. If my head contained multiple instances of intelligent entities I would be capable of doing much more, for example as I write this I could be studying for my biology quiz later today or even work on my programming project whose description is so vague it would have been better communicated through a series of shrugs and facial contortions.
But that is not the case. And so I’ve failed out of my first class ever. Two programming classes is too much for my feeble mind. I thought I might be able to pull off a C after not completing two programming assignments in a row, but one blank midterm later, I realized it’s not possible and endeavored to save my other classes from the same fate instead of continuing the futile grind which consisted mostly of a staring contest with my computer monitor punctuated by restroom breaks and spontaneous fits of cursing.
but all is not lost
I’ve been offered a summer job actually writing code with quite a respectable company. I’m still waiting on the background check to go through, but pending that speed bump, I shall be starting June 13th at a certain company whose name rhymes almost precisely with Lockheed Martin. I’m thoroughly excited, though intimidated by the task I’ve been assigned.
congratulations
Lauren graduated from USC, which is hard for me to comprehend. Right now, she’s just looking for a job, and once she has that I’ll still deal with it mentally by telling myself it’s an internship, but once she doesn’t go back to school in the fall and refuses to go to class despite my urgings, I’ll have to come to terms with the situation.
At least by then USC football will be back and I’ll be able to go to a game with the free ticket that Lauren gets….. Wait a minute! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

title:
dark water
starring: jennifer connelly, camryn manheim, pete postlethwaite, and a bunch of people i didn’t recognize.
the movie would make a lot more sense if they told you at the beginning, rather than at the end, that it was based off of a japanese novel. in my experience, japanese writing tends to make very little sense, which is about what this movie did. it was billed as a scary movie; it was fairly dark, but more startling than actually scary. and very strange.
verdict: worth watching, but not worth paying for. wait till it’s out on DVD. [unless, like me, you like jennifer connelly, in which case it’s probably worth paying for]

1) everything is pretty easy for about 5 or 6 hours out of the day. after that, 8000 mexicans who speak very little english will come in to cash harvest checks with me, who speaks slightly more than very little spanish.
2) entertaining coworkers. i think banking must warp their minds some how. most of the time, like at the last branch i worked at, that was good... everyone there had a great sense of humor. sometimes, like at the branch i’m working at now, it’s not so good... the lady is spend most of my time working with is very paranoid.
3) as with most jobs, you occasionally have the opportunity to meet an attractive person of the opposite sex. today was a good day in that sense. i got to meet a very attractive canadian girl (by "meet" in this case, i mean i said hi and then the old lady i work with took over the conversation), a fairly attractive hispanic girl, and a very attractive farming girl.
4) that’s about it, really. but it pays better than the last job i had, and having regular hours is pretty nice. now if we could just eliminate that whole morning thing, where pretty much nothing is actually happening anyways, life would be great.

i just learned the history behind that expression last night while watching "myth busters" on the discovery channel. great show.
anyways, the expression comes from a civil war myth. a man on the battlefield was shot through the testes. the bullet then hit a woman standing some distance behind him, striking her somewhere in the lower abdomen. 9 months later, she gave birth to several children.
the myth was, unfortunately, busted. they tested it using a civil war-era rifle, a pouch of sperm sandwiched between several layers of canvas etc. representing the guys clothes, and some sort of jello-y stuff under several layers of clothing to stand in for the woman. though the bullet passed cleanly through the "man" and hit the "woman" behind him, there was no trace of the sperm in or around the entry wound. they speculated that any that actually got caught on the bullet was fried by the heat.
don’t you feel better about knowing that?

thank you for the brave men who helped to found it.
thank you for the men and women serving in our armed forces, fighting to protect freedom at home and abroad.
thank you that in spite of all our screw ups, you haven’t decided to smite us.
happy 229th birthday, America. may you enjoy many more.

never, ever, watch the movie "the forgotten." or at the very least, don’t ever pay money to see it. on a scale of 1 to 10, that movie lost hardcore... even with the help of alcohol, i’m going to rate it a negative 47 at best. it was very disjointed, it never really explained the bad guys, and julianne moore was a freaking psycho.

Me: Six cents please.
Old Lady: Here you go.
Me: Do you need a bag or an envelope or anything for that?
Old Lady: An envelope would be good. It’s pretty windy out there, I need something to keep it stiff.
Me: I have that same problem.

December 31, 1969
I slept sweetly unpretending
that the night was always ending
she breathes lightly right next to me
and I dreamed of her inside of me
and in my dream she sang so sweetly
a melody I hope to sing
so enslaved by her sweet wonder
it cut my legs and pangs of hunger
she sang my name and so engulfed
and I cried and felt my legs fail
in her arms I trembled electric
and she led me and she held me
then waking she was older still
and holds my love against it’s will
in spell cast with her palms extended
cursed love is never ended
cursed eyes are never closing
cursed arms are never closing
cursed children never rising
cursed me never despising
oh I am loving always holding
while she sleeps her song unfolding
epic song it tells of how
of she and I are living now
cursed love.
Back to Portland, alive and slightly crispy. Colorado seems to be my designated detox/decontamination chamber before returning back to my default world. The unpacking and the rabid laundrification has for the most part already happened. Now, the sleep and the shower and the shoehorning of my head and my thoughts back into my daily routine, whatever that is lately. Apparently my MCAT review class ended while I was out of town. Whoops. Smeg it, I’m sure what I learned on the ground is more relevant anyways.
I’m just gonna sit here, scratch my head, and say God Damn a few more times until it all sets in.
God Damn...
