statistic of the moment

April 8, 2005

“[Wal-Mart’s] $285 billion in sales nearly match the gross domestic product of Saudi Arabia.”
-From The Christian Science Monitor

Call me extravagant, but I would think if your company pulls in as much money as a country that just happens to be “the world’s largest net oil exporter…”, you’d be able to pay your employees decently and maybe offer affordable health care.

that’s weird

spontaneous combustion is one thing, but spontaneously exploding? apparently that’s what’s happening to a bunch of toads in germany. now if only all the other frogs in europe would start exploding, the world would be a much nicer place. that seems unlikely, but i can dream, can’t i?

Personal Security AbomiNation

April 16, 2005

As an avid computer hacker and security (semi)professional, I encourage all of you to write your senators and encourage them to repeal the REAL ID Act. This act attempts to put an RFID chip into EVERY passport, broadcasting sensitive personal, identifying information to passers-by. Feel free to use the letters I sent to my senators, Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, or goto the EFF to email, fax, and print yours, automatically.

I encourage you to take 5 minutes to do this; its free, takes zero time (just fill in your name and address where you are registered, and they do the rest).

Hop!

April 20, 2005
I learned recently that rabbits have been misclassified, and since genetic testing is now being used to confirm all of the taxonomy, they have been moved. Turns out that rabbits do not belong in the Rodentia order, but rather in the order Lagomorpha, which makes them more closely related to deer and cows than to mice and rats. So, next time you see a rabbit don’t kick it and mutter "Stupid big eared, big footed rat." You should instead, stop what you are doing, consider this particular rabbit and its genetic heritage, kick it, and yell "MOO!" (For you doubt-prone naysayers, here’s a link, National Geographic says so; cute picture of punt-able creatures too).

If you’ve not been following ’[info]’ioerror’s journal, you’re missing out. He’s right now in Kurdistan as a civilian/hacker/photographer, having the adventure I wish I were having right now. Beautiful shots and interesting stories from a good friend of mine.

Safe and adventurous travels, Jake.

Seattle

April 14, 2005

If the humor of this scene misses you, this should help. Frank Moss of the State Department is demonstrating the RFID-esque chips in the new US Passports (to be issued within the next year or few) to a crowd, including John Gilmore, a founder of the EFF.

I’m up in seattle for the next few days at CFP, and I’ve definitely been learning/seeing/geeking a lot. I’ve had the fun opportunity to reconnect with the EFF, who I met while working defcon this year. Considering the almost stereotypical "oh shit, I’m graduating, now what?" hysteria that’s engulfing my waking life, this con has been a godsend. Who knows, I might even have a future in this stuff someday...
